Janjina lies inland on the Pelješac Peninsula, at its narrowest point, about two kilometres from both coasts. The town’s architectural history and historical traces take centre stage here; the coastal towns in the wider Janjina destination offer a different focus. When choosing the focus of your trip, it is therefore worth distinguishing between the historic townscape and the coastal landscapes of the wider Municipality of Janjina.

Churches and Architectural History in the Town Centre

Janjina’s historic centre developed in the 15th century. Several captain’s houses from the 19th century recall the town’s maritime history. One notable landmark is the parish church of Saint Blaise: it was built in 1876 and opened on 5 May 1878. The church is considered to have been built to Gothic designs. The upper, pyramidal section of the bell tower was made from stone from Korčula in 1929.

The former Prince’s Palace also shows the connection between architecture and local history. Above the entrance is a rustic relief of Saint Blaise seated. The captain’s houses, the church and the relief offer different perspectives on Janjina’s past, without any one building needing to tell the town’s entire story.

Archaeological Traces from Different Periods

Above the village lies Gradina, an Illyrian hillfort surrounded by numerous tumuli. The remains of the pre-Romanesque Church of Saint George include a late medieval cemetery and fragments of the altar screen. The fragments feature interlace ornaments and a donor inscription bearing the name Petar.

The walls of a Roman villa rustica and stelae from the 1st century were found at the cemetery church of Saint Stephen. Together, these sites and finds offer insight into different periods in the history of the peninsula: from the Illyrian hillfort and Roman remains to medieval churches and cemeteries. They complement the view of the houses and religious buildings in the town centre with an archaeological perspective.

Landscape and Trails

The landscape around Janjina is characterised by vineyards, olive groves and Dalmatian maquis. More than 15 orchid species have been recorded in the area around Janjina, mainly in olive groves and on dry, rocky ground; a smaller number occur in pine forests. A section of the route to Janjina also offers views of forests and the sea. The vegetation described there includes kermes oak, strawberry tree, sage, rosemary, immortelle and other herbs.

In the wider Janjina destination, hiking trails and marked cycling routes are part of the tourist infrastructure. An interactive MTB and hiking map from the Pelješac tourist boards includes five mountain biking circuits and six hiking routes. One cycling section is about 40 kilometres long, can be ridden without dismounting and is recommended for an e-bike. Travel times and trail conditions may vary; check route details and markings before setting out.

Coastline and Other Townscapes in the Janjina Destination

The wider Janjina destination has pebble beaches in Sreser and Drače. A well-maintained waterfront promenade connects the two towns within the Municipality of Janjina. This offers a different focus from the churches, captain’s houses and archaeological remains in the town of Janjina. If you are planning a walk along the coast, you can check the condition of the promenade before your visit, as it may change due to maintenance or coastal works.

Wine and Olive Oil

Dežulović is a small, family-run winery in Janjina. Drawing on a long family tradition of wine and olive growing, it produces wine, spirits and olive oil. The winery is located beside the main road on Pelješac and has parking. The range of products may change; if you are interested in a particular product, check its availability in advance.
