Kolan offers a range of options for a stay: the “Putevima kolanjske prošlosti” walking route connects historic sites with the Kolanjsko blato ornithological reserve, while the Put Girenice cycling route follows a gravel track towards the reserve. Other highlights include an ethnographic collection, a nearby beach and experiences centred on cheese. When choosing where to stay, you can decide what matters most to you: nature and trails, local history or culinary traditions.
On Foot or by Bike
The “Putevima kolanjske prošlosti” circular route connects the Bunar, the 15th/16th-century Church of Sv. Jeronim, the remains of a Roman villa rustica, the protected Kolanjsko blato ornithological reserve, dry-stone walls, traces of coal mining from 1756 to 1966, and the stone bridge near Suteska. Architectural, archaeological and landscape features are thus brought together along a single circular route.
The Put Girenice cycling route starts in Kolanjsko polje and follows a gravel track towards the Kolanjsko blato–Rogoza ornithological reserve. The specific differences to consider when choosing between the two are the route type and the surface: a circular route with historic and landscape sites, or a cycling route on gravel towards the reserve. Trail conditions can change; check them before setting out.
Nature Reserve and Beach
The Kolanjsko blato – Blato rogoza protected area has been designated a national reserve since 1988 and covers 174.91 hectares. Sv. Duh beach offers a different kind of natural attraction: it is 1 km from Kolan, and the shallow water extends up to 50 m from the shore. A designated protected area and a coastal option therefore provide different points of reference when choosing where to stay. Beach conditions can change; check them before visiting.
Everyday Life and Cheese-Making Tradition
The Kolan Ethnographic Collection was founded in 1978 by KUD Bartul Kašić. Through exhibits in a konoba and a household, it depicts the everyday life and work of the people of Kolan. The specific presentation may change; its focus is on these ways of life and work. The collection thus draws attention to different aspects from the circular route, with its historic and landscape sites.
Fešta od sira has been held in Kolan since 2015 and is primarily dedicated to promoting Paški sir. It also gives visitors the opportunity to discover the gastronomy, cultural heritage and traditions of the island of Pag. If you would like to plan your trip around the event, check the dates in advance. At smaller cheese dairies and family-run businesses in the Kolan and Mandre area, you can taste and buy Pag cheese; individual businesses’ offerings may change. At the Skutafest “feel&taste Kolan,” visitors can enjoy different kinds of Skuta and learn about how it is made. The offerings therefore differ in terms of cheese type and format: an event promoting Paški sir, tastings and purchases at smaller businesses, and Skuta with insights into its production.
