Košljun is a small harbour in a naturally sheltered bay on the southern side of the island of Pag. Pebble and sandy beaches, as well as protected areas, prehistoric hillfort remains and routes, offer different points of interest for planning your trip. Which ones matter to you depends on whether you are thinking more about the coast, nature, history or cycling when choosing a destination.

Bay and beach

Its location on the southern side of the island places Košljun on Pag; pebble and sand, by contrast, describe the beach surfaces. Both beach types are part of the coastal landscape. If the nature of the shoreline plays a role in choosing your destination, you can take this difference into account rather than looking only for a general beach character. The harbour and bay add another perspective on this coastal town to its beach features.

Natural environment and protected areas

The Košljun planning area lies within the Natura 2000 site Košljunski zaljev (HR3000042), a protected area under the Habitats Directive, and within the Natura 2000 bird protection area HR1000023 (SZ Dalmacija i Pag). Košljunski zaljev covers 285.03 hectares and consists entirely of marine area. This places two different protection designations alongside the beach and route features: a site under the Habitats Directive and a bird protection area. The area figure refers to Košljunski zaljev. Two habitat types under the Habitats Directive are also protected in Košljunski zaljev; 65 species are listed for HR1000023 under the nature conservation directives.

A cultural and historical connection

The remains of the destroyed prehistoric hillfort of Stagnica (Kruna) lie in the immediate vicinity of the Košljun planning area. This adds a specific cultural and historical name to the themes of the coast and protected areas. If you consider early history as well as the landscape when choosing a destination, Stagnica (Kruna) offers a distinct point of interest.

Assess routes by their features

The Put Starog grada Paga route is designated Kš1, is 4.8 kilometres long, and is classified as linear, easy and gravel-surfaced. Its length, route type, difficulty rating and surface offer different criteria for your planning. Trail conditions may change, so check them before your visit. The Stari grad–Košljun cycling route is also designated as a cycling route. When choosing a route, Kš1 mainly answers questions about length and surface, while Stari grad–Košljun clearly identifies the cycling connection.

Beach services and finding accommodation

The City of Pag’s 2024 beach concession plan listed windsurf board, sun lounger and parasol rental at Plaža Košljun beach. The availability of seasonal beach services may change. If you plan to use one of these rental services, check before your visit whether the one you want is available on your travel dates. This way, choosing a destination starts with the interests that matter for your trip.
