Donji Kraj brings together several distinct ways to explore the area: the church in Kraj’s old centre, with eleven votive paintings; its connection to the birthplace of Viktor Car Emin; Lučica natural beach; and a marked trail towards Sv. Anton. Culture, coast and views sit side by side. When planning your trip, it is worth choosing which of these themes to focus on: local history, the beach or the hiking trail.

Church, paintings and literary connections

In the old centre of Kraj stands the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, dating from the 15th century. It served as the private chapel of the Mohović family and contains 11 votive paintings that can be viewed. Its former use as a family chapel and the paintings offer two different perspectives on the same building. There is also a biographical connection to Viktor Car Emin: Kraj is the birthplace of the Croatian writer and publicist Viktor Car Emin (1870–1963). The cultural connection therefore extends from a specific church to the history of Croatian literature and publishing.

Beach and views in Kraj

Lučica is a small natural beach. From Kraj, there are views across Kvarner towards Rijeka, Krk and Cres; Mediterranean vegetation is another of Kraj’s features. The beach and landscape are thus distinct aspects of the area. Beach conditions can vary by season, so it is worth taking the situation at the time of your trip into account.

A trail with views over Kraj

The marked trail from Kraj towards Sv. Anton offers views over Kraj, the sea and Kvarner. While Lučica is a small natural beach, the trail combines hiking with scenic views. Before setting out, check the trail markings and conditions on site.

The historical and mythological Trebišća–Perun trail introduces the religious beliefs of the first Slavic settlers in the Kvarner area. It passes through preserved hamlets in the Potoška vala gorge and reaches the 880-metre-high summit of Perun. Unlike the trail from Kraj, which is noted for views over the town, sea and Kvarner, this route focuses on hamlets, the gorge and religious interpretation.

Brseč offers another perspective on built heritage: its lanes and passageways retain a medieval character, and most of its town houses were built in the 17th century. An oil mill dating from the 17th century is known as a Toš. In Kraj, the focus is on the church and its votive paintings; in Brseč, it is on the historic streetscape and the oil mill.

The beaches also differ in their stated features. Sipar is several hundred metres long; the Mošćenička Draga stream carried the sand here, while the sea waves shaped the pebbles. Senjavac is a nudist beach behind Sv. Ivan Beach. Lučica in Kraj, by contrast, is a small natural beach. The beaches can therefore be compared by size, formation and use.
