Even the local dialect of the Municipality of Blato has its own cultural heritage listing: Govor Blata na Korčuli is registered in Croatia as intangible cultural heritage under number Z-7801. This is a distinctive starting point for discovering the municipality’s cultural side, alongside archaeological traces, church art and festivals that shape the year.

Church, Archaeology and Everyday Traditions

The parish Church of All Saints in Blato is mentioned in documents dating back to the 14th century. It also houses a panel painting of All Saints and the Madonna and Child by Girolamo da Santacroce. The relics of Saint Vincenca are also kept there: every year on April 28, they are carried through the town in a procession.

Another historical trace leads to Kopila, an archaeological site in the municipality with remains of a Hellenistic necropolis. At the Barilo Ethno House, the focus is on traditional everyday culture: the ethnographic collection includes agricultural tools, traditional clothing, kitchen utensils, handicrafts, fishing equipment and stone objects. Tastings of homemade liqueurs, rakija, arancini, roasted almonds and dried figs prepared according to traditional recipes are also available. As tasting arrangements may change, check the current options before your visit.

Festivals Throughout the Year

Every year on All Saints’ Day, lumblija prepared according to tradition is blessed and offered for tasting in the main square, Plokata. The traditional “Days of Lumblija” event is also held. The Blato Week offers another insight into local festival traditions: it takes place every year from April 23 to 28 and features concerts, exhibitions, religious processions and folklore performances. As the programme may change, check the dates and details before your trip.

During Blato Summer, the Kumpanjija performs every week in the square in front of the church. This adds a seasonal cultural offering to the spring events; check the current performance dates when planning your visit.

Hiking Trails, Cycling Routes and Coastal Towns

There are different ways to choose a route: the municipality has more than 140 km of signposted cycling routes, while six marked hiking trails are listed: Lungo Mare, Belvedere, Tragom povijesti, Sudbinska luka, Korčula na dlanu and Put Blažene M. Petković. The Belvedere hiking trail is 4.5 km long and runs from Prižba via Sv. Marko to Prišćapac. Signposting and route conditions may change, so check the latest information before setting out.

The coastal towns each have their own character. Prišćapac is a tourist resort with a pebble beach and additional tourist amenities. The peninsula also has a diving centre whose professional staff organise diving excursions and courses; offerings may change, so it is worth checking the latest information. The small islands along Blato’s southern coast are popular, secluded destinations for kayak and motorboat visits. Prigradica, in turn, retains the atmosphere of a small harbour.

The landscape also includes areas within the Natura 2000 ecological network in the municipality. Blato lies in the centre of the island of Korčula; accommodation can be found in the surrounding bays, which stretch for 40 km along the island’s northern and southern coasts.
