On the northern slopes of Šubir lie the Kamene kugle, a geological natural feature of the Municipality of Pojezerje. The silicate-carbonate nodular concretions measure 2 to 30 centimetres in diameter; their internal structure is laminated, meaning it is made up of layers. They have been designated a protected natural feature since 2011. Nodular concretions are rounded mineral rock formations whose shape resembles nodules.
Landscape and Protected Areas
The landscape areas are also characterised by different protection statuses. The Polje Jezero area is listed as a particularly valuable cultural landscape zone with PR 2 status. The mountain areas of Pozla Gora are designated a particularly valuable cultural landscape zone with ZPP 3 status; the terraces of abandoned vineyards in Dubrava also have this status. The smaller area around the site of the Chapel of St Rok is under strict landscape protection, and the chapel is thought to date from around the 14th century. The polje, mountain areas, vineyard terraces and protected chapel site each add a different feature to the municipality.
The areas covered also differ: Polje Jezero, Pozla Gora and the vineyard terraces are designated landscape zones, while strict protection applies to the smaller area around the site of St Rok. For orientation, it helps to consider the place and its protection category together.
Polje Jezero also extends across the Municipality of Pojezerje. The polje contains springs and karst caves and sinkholes designated as habitat types. Together with the PR 2 cultural landscape status, this illustrates different perspectives on the same wider landscape: a cultural landscape worthy of protection, and specific, named karst and spring habitats.
Cycling and Kayaking in Polje Jezero
Polje Jezero offers cyclists the opportunity to put together their own tours using a network of connecting cycling routes. For a water-based perspective, kayaking is available on the Matica. When choosing your activities, you can therefore opt for a self-planned route on land or a kayak trip on the river. Check the current route before setting off on a specific cycling trip.
Historic Sites and Local Traditions
In Kobiljača, the Chapel of Our Lady of Jetera is classified as a historic chapel with ZPP 2 protection status. In Otrići, the Parish Church of St Nicholas is classified as a historic church with ZPP 3 protection status. Above Mali Prolog, Veliki Šubir is listed as a prehistoric fortification. The range thus extends from historic religious buildings to a prehistoric fortification. If you plan to visit any of these sites, check their condition and access in advance.
Another local tradition is Ribarska večer – Rokov dan in Pojezerje. It is considered a traditional part of the celebration of the Municipality Day and the feast of Saint Roko. If you plan to visit around the time of the celebration, check the latest event dates. The location of the Mali Prolog–Crveni Grm international border crossing also helps with geographical orientation: it is within the Municipality of Pojezerje.
