A medieval cemetery above Dubravka and the village’s inclusion in a cultural heritage route give a trip here a distinctive historical focus. Around St. Barbara’s Church, you can encounter different aspects of stone funerary art; the Stećci Trail broadens the view to a wider area. When planning, it is worth distinguishing this local context from the broader landscape and cultural themes of the higher-level destination of Općina Konavle.
St. Barbara’s Church and stone funerary monuments
St. Barbara’s Church is considered one of the oldest small churches in Konavle. The surrounding cemetery is the largest surviving medieval cemetery in the area. Above Dubravka lies the St. Barbara site, with a medieval cemetery containing 104 tombstones. The site was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2016. The stećci include slabs and chest-shaped monuments. The number of tombstones and the forms of the stećci describe different features of the site: the number indicates the size of the cemetery, while the forms give an impression of the variety of these stone monuments.
Dubravka is also part of the Stećci Trail, a cultural heritage route connecting 19 stećci sites in Dubrovnik-Neretva County. It extends from the Neretva area through the Dubrovnik Littoral to Konavle. This places the cemetery in Dubravka within the broader heritage of stone burial sites, without conflating the regional stops with the village itself. Those interested in medieval funerary art can therefore explore both a specific theme in Dubravka and a wider regional context.
Općina Konavle: landscape, trails and cultural heritage
In the higher-level destination of Općina Konavle, the landscape includes a fertile valley extending up to 35 km in length and up to 12 km in width. On the mountain side, the slopes of Snježnica, which rises to 1,234 m, and Bjelotina border the valley. On the sea side, steep cliffs shape the coast, stretching from the port of Cavtat through Molunat to the Prevlaka Peninsula and Cape Oštro. These contrasts between valley, mountain slopes and coast give the broader destination several landscape features to explore.
The regional trails also vary in length and landscape. The Cavtat–Močići–Čilipi hiking trail is 8 km long and passes through the coastal landscape of Konavle; side trails lead to swimming spots by the cliffs. The Konavoske stijene educational trail starts in Popovići and runs for about 4 km above the cliffs. The Ronald Brown Trail starts in Gornji Obod and leads to the summit of Stražišće at 791 m. Endemic plant species and protected animal species can be found along the trail; the summit offers panoramic views of Cavtat, Konavle, Župa and Dubrovnik. The stated distances help you compare the routes; check local trail conditions before setting out on a hike.
Other regional cultural sites include Fort Sokol and the Mithraeum in Močići. Fort Sokol is a notable fortress from the time of the Republic of Ragusa, built on the site of earlier Illyrian and Roman fortifications. The Mithraeum is a sanctuary dedicated to the ancient god Mithras, whose cult was widespread in the region from the 2nd to the 4th century. In Čilipi, the Museum of the Konavle Region houses about 500 ethnographic objects, including traditional costumes, embroidery, other textile works, jewellery, weapons, musical instruments and items of daily life.
The Ljuta River offers another glimpse into regional history. The mill complex comprises eight watermills for flour, two for oil and three fulling mills. The system of so-called lower mills was built after 1550 and is still preserved today. The source and upper course of the Ljuta are protected by the state as a nature park; the watermill is protected as a cultural monument. In Pridvorje, the Franciscan monastery with the Church of St. Blaise recalls another cultural tradition: the monastery was a pilgrimage site and housed a significant collection of sacred art. It was built from 1423 to 1429 in the early Dubrovnik Renaissance style.
