Explore Lipovljani on the 5.5-kilometre “Lipa” walking route. Other trails lead to natural and cultural sights in Piljenice and the wider destination of the Municipality of Lipovljani. You can choose from a loop through the centre, a forest trail that requires prior arrangements, and a longer cycling route, each with different distances and conditions.

Cultural sites in Lipovljani

The local walking tour includes the memorial room dedicated to writer and forester Josip Kozarac, the late Baroque Roman Catholic Church of St Joseph, and the Greek Catholic Church of St Anne. The Church of St Joseph was completed in 1772. The Slovak Ethnographic House is also part of the tour: it houses an ethnographic collection and hosts cultural events for the Slovak minority. Visiting arrangements for indoor spaces may vary; check current options before planning an indoor visit.

Walking and cycling routes

The Lipa route passes through the centre of Lipovljani and by important sights and places of interest. These include Lipovljani Park, the memorial room, both churches, the school arboretum, and the Slovak Ethnographic House. The 5.5-kilometre walking route takes around one hour and ten minutes. It offers a way to combine several cultural sites and the park on a loop around the town.

The Tenina educational trail is in Lonjsko Polje Nature Park near Piljenice, close to the Vaclavekov Mill and the Lipovljani fishpond. The very easy loop is 2.5 kilometres long and passes through a lowland forest of oaks and hornbeams. Sixteen educational panels line the route. As the trail is visited with a park guide, visits must be arranged in advance with the park’s visitor centres; confirm visiting arrangements before travelling.

The linear “Picturesque Piljenice” walking route runs for 4.5 kilometres through Piljenice alongside the Pakra River. Along the way are historic mills, bridges, and rural architecture; the route ends at Jame Gradine in Kraljeva Velika, a destination for nature visitors and anglers. Check local conditions and access before setting out.

The 30-kilometre Kraljeva cycling route is a loop through Lipovljani, Piljenice, and Kraljeva Velika. An optional detour leads to Opeka in Lonjsko Polje Nature Park. The ride is estimated to take around 70 to 90 minutes; check the route and estimated duration against current signage or local information. Compared with Lipa, this is the longer route and connects several places. Although the estimated times are of a similar order, they refer to different distances and modes of transport.

Nature and culture in the Municipality of Lipovljani

Lonjsko Polje Nature Park shapes part of the Municipality of Lipovljani: around 40 percent of its area lies within the park. Lipovljani, Piljenice, and Kraljeva Velika form its northern entrance zone. The park is associated here with nature conservation, plant diversity, and numerous bird species. This overview of the municipality complements the routes through the town and nearby area without treating the individual routes as equivalent.

Piljenice has a public tourist rest area with benches and an information board. Also in Piljenice, Toš Mill recalls the town’s former milling tradition. In Kraljeva Velika, Jame Gradine is a developed fishing and excursion area used by anglers and serving as a rest stop for nature lovers.

Events throughout the year

Events can also help with travel planning in the wider destination of the Municipality of Lipovljani. “Antunovo u Kraljevoj Velikoj” is held every year on 13 June for the feast of St Anthony. The traditional folk festival features cultural, entertainment, and sporting activities. After Mass comes a traditional Muntă, a kind of auction of local livestock, usually attended by locals and other visitors. The programme may vary.

The “Lipovljanski susreti” takes place every year on the last weekend of August in the centre of Lipovljani; the event has been held since 1974. The festival includes a large ethno-gastronomy market in the central park, featuring traditional foods. The two events therefore differ both in season and programme: the Feast of St Anthony is associated with Mass and the Muntă, while the market is also a central feature of the Lipovljanski susreti.
