Get to know Drenje from two perspectives: its Slavonian village layout and the lakes, trails and cultural attractions in the surrounding area. The village lies on the eastern slopes of Krndija, along the road connecting Đakovo with the Mandićevac wine-growing area and the Borovik excursion area. You can choose between local history, nature and outdoor activities.

Village History and Culture

Drenje is considered a typical Slavonian village. It is laid out along one main street, with two side streets and two sokaks (narrow lanes). The Church of St Michael is in Drenje; check locally for current visiting arrangements before you go. Early written records also offer insight into the village’s history: a 1406 charter mentions Drenje Hill under the name Drenowch mons, and a 1434 document lists Drenje as an episcopal estate. Before Ottoman rule, the village also had a church dedicated to Saints Cosmas and Damian.

Susreti prijateljstva is a cultural and sporting tradition. Its origins date back to 1976; its stated aims include preserving and promoting local cultural heritage and traditions. The 28th edition took place on 5 and 6 June 2026 and included sports, cultural performances, gastronomy and entertainment. The programme may vary from one edition to another.

Kosinac and Borovik: Two Different Lakes

Kosinac is 200 metres from Drenje and surrounded by nature and greenery. The lake covers about 50 hectares, is approximately one kilometre long and up to seven metres deep. Check locally for current access arrangements before you visit.

Borovik lies west of Drenje and is an artificial lake. It was created in 1978 by damming the Vuka riverbed. At around 160 hectares, it is considerably larger than Kosinac. Carp fishing also takes place at Borovik; carp can weigh up to 30 kilograms. Check the current fishing regulations before fishing, as conditions may change.

Hiking, Cycling and Accommodation

The Vučje Glave–Borovik hiking section is eight kilometres long, takes about two hours and has an elevation gain of 80 metres. Its length, approximate duration and elevation gain give you specific details for planning your trip. The Od Drenja do Borovika cycling route starts in front of the Drenje municipal office and runs via Mandićevac to Lake Borovik and into the forests of Krndija. Check the current route and signage before setting out.

Planinarski dom Borovik is an overnight option for groups: it can accommodate up to 20 hikers or scouts and is open by arrangement. Confirm availability before you arrive. This lets you plan your accommodation alongside your choice of hiking or cycling, without treating the approximate tour details as confirmation that the accommodation will be open.

The Wider Area: Općina Drenje

Beyond the village itself, it is worth exploring the wider destination of Općina Drenje. There is a 32-kilometre mountain biking trail by Lake Borovik. The wine roads lead to family-run businesses that produce and sell wine; visitors can sample a variety of wines there. Check with each business about opening hours and tasting availability. When choosing your stay, you can decide whether to focus on village history, tours around Lake Borovik or the wine culture of Općina Drenje.
