The Vrataruša Plateau stretches across the Adriatic slopes of Velika Kapela, roughly between Sibinj and Senj. Velebit degenia grows on Vrataruša’s sun- and wind-exposed limestone terrain; it blooms in April, though the exact timing depends on the weather. Cultural heritage, landscape and cycling each offer a different focus. When planning, it helps to distinguish local road connections from routes in the wider Senj hinterland.
Cultural Heritage from Prehistory to the Middle Ages
Vrataruša is one of the historic rural ensembles. The monastery of Saint Helena and its church were built in the mid-14th century. The ruins of the Pauline Glagolitic Monastery of Saint Helena lie in Vrataruša, below the road beside a coastal bay. Gradina Kokerna in Vrataruša is one of the prehistoric archaeological sites. These landmarks offer different perspectives: Gradina Kokerna represents prehistory, while the monastery provides a specific point of reference in the medieval period. The historic rural ensemble adds to the picture of the place as a whole.
Roads and Paths at the Right Scale
Local road L 59008 connects Vrataruša with L 59001. The unpaved road from Klenovica, considered the easiest ascent to the Vrataruša Plateau, should be treated separately. Road conditions can change, so check them before use. In the wider Senj highlands, forest roads and fire roads are also used for outings and hiking. These represent different scales for planning: a local connection between roads, a described ascent from Klenovica, and a regional network for outings and hikes.
Cycling the Trail 306
Trail 306 is a 45-kilometre MTB loop that passes through Vrataruša. The full route is Bater–Pleteno–Breze–Luka Krmpotska–Alan–Vrataruša–Bile–Bater. Bater is therefore both the starting and ending point of the loop, while Vrataruša lies along the route. The distance refers to the entire loop. If you are considering this route for your plans, check the latest route details before setting out; route information may be updated.
Hiking Routes in the Senj Hinterland
For hiking, the wider Senj hinterland offers its own regional setting. This includes the 50-kilometre Senjska obilaznica through Krivi Put and Vratnik. There are also marked routes towards Zavižan, as well as routes between Jablanac, Turska vrata, Strogir and Alan. The 57-kilometre Premužić Trail runs from Zavižan to Baške. These routes connect different place names and have their own distances, so they provide a broader range of options for hiking plans in the hinterland rather than describing a single route through Vrataruša.
