Senj can be explored through two distinct interests: Nehaj Fortress, with its collections, exhibitions and views, and several bathing spots, each with its own features. When planning your stay, it is helpful to consider culture and landscape separately from the facilities you want by the water. This lets you give the different highlights the right weight in your itinerary.

Nehaj Fortress: collections and views

Nehaj Fortress was built in 1558. It houses collections on the Senj Uskoks and the Senj coastal captaincy, as well as permanent exhibitions about the churches in Senj and coats of arms belonging to both commoners and nobles. To get a clear sense of the content, it is worth distinguishing between the formats: the Uskoks and the coastal captaincy are collection topics, while the churches and coats of arms are presented in permanent exhibitions. This allows you to focus on the cultural themes that interest you most.

The upper part of the fortress serves as a viewpoint. From there, the view extends across the Croatian Littoral, several islands in the northern Adriatic, the Gorski kotar mountain range, and Učka and Velebit. The panorama therefore takes in not only the coast and islands but also several mountain areas. If you would like to include landscapes in a cultural outing, Nehaj offers another perspective alongside its exhibitions.

Choose bathing spots by their features

The town beach of Škver is a pebble beach with accessible concrete areas. Facilities include food and drink, camping, amenities for children and showers. There are also water activities: jet skiing, kayaking, pedal boats and small boats. Škver therefore offers both a range of facilities and a selection of activities on the water.

Other bathing spots have their own features: Prva Draga is a small pebble cove, while Banja is an accessible beach. Uvala Vlaška is dog-friendly and has a car park, a fitness trail, seating and an access tunnel. These differences can help you narrow down your choices: Škver is noted for its facilities and water activities, Prva Draga for its small pebble cove, Banja for its accessibility, and Uvala Vlaška for being dog-friendly and its facilities. At Uvala Vlaška, the car park and access tunnel are infrastructure features; the fitness trail and seating add opportunities for exercise and spending time there.

Which of these features matter for your stay depends on what you are looking for by the water. You might choose based on water activities, the type of beach, accessibility or a dog-friendly bathing spot. These places therefore do not all offer the same thing, but different aspects of a beach visit.

Facilities and services at the beaches may change seasonally. Before your visit, check which of the activities and services mentioned are currently available.
