Seline lies between a pebble beach and the Mala Paklenica Gorge. Two aspects are particularly helpful when choosing the area as a travel destination: its location between the coast and the gorge, and the trails linking Seline with Starigrad and the mountainous hinterland. There are also traces of history in the village and along the trails. This makes it possible to include landscape, outdoor activities and cultural heritage together in your travel plans. It appeals to travellers who take both landscape and cultural heritage into account when choosing a destination.
Mala Paklenica and the National Park Entrance
The Mala Paklenica Gorge is known for its wilderness and unspoilt nature. Its rock walls reach heights of up to 300 metres, while some sections are no more than 10 metres wide. Entrance 2 to Paklenica National Park is in Seline, in front of the Mala Paklenica Gorge. Opening hours at the seasonal reception may vary. A ticket purchased at Entrance 2 is also valid for Entrance 1 to the national park. As ticket rules may change, check them before your visit.
Trails Between the Coast and the Hinterland
One specific route option is the 8 km “Short Journey Through the Past” hiking and cycling trail. It is classified as easy and connects Starigrad with Seline. Promenades and walking and cycling paths link Seline and Starigrad through picturesque hamlets in the mountainous hinterland. The hiking and cycling trail through the mountains passes old hamlets and offers views of the Velebit Channel. From any hamlet along the trail, you can descend to the coast and swim in the sea.
Church, Wells and Historic Water Structures
An old well built using traditional dry-stone construction stands in the centre of Seline, on Put bunarića. Between Starigrad and Seline, next to the Adriatic Coastal Road, stands the medieval Church of St. Peter. It was built in the pre-Romanesque Old Croatian style and probably dates from the transition between the 9th and 10th centuries. Archaeological research has been carried out at the church, which has been fully restored.
In Mala Paklenica, a stone dam from one of the old mills has been preserved. Near the hamlet of Jurline, the former main village cistern was built during the Austro-Hungarian period. Along the trail between Seline and the hinterland, stone wells and village cisterns from this period can be seen. St. Peter’s Church and the water structures offer different points of interest: one focuses on church architecture, the other on wells, cisterns and traces of former mill use.
The Mirila in the area are protected as cultural heritage of the Republic of Croatia. A map of the Mirila educational trails is available at the tourist information centre in Seline; check availability if you would like to plan specifically around the map.
