Get to know Rudanovac through its cultural landscape along the Matica and its distinctive architectural and natural features. Houses, a section of the old Kordonska cesta and the remains of a mill tell different stories of the place; wetlands and a botanically notable plant locality complete the picture. This offers starting points for a stay focused on village history or landscape studies.

Village Structure and Architectural Heritage

Rudanovac comprises Staro Naselje and Novo Naselje. House No. 130 is designated as a traditional house with a stable and bakery. House No. 8 is a single-storey wooden house with outbuildings. Planning guidelines specify elongated or L-shaped building forms, pitched roofs, wooden verandas, and stone or wood surfaces. These planning features provide a distinct framework for the architectural character of the place.

In the old settlement near Vratnik lies a section of the original gravel track of the Kordonska cesta. Hewn stone boundaries line the roadside there. The collapsed walls of a mill and sawmill remain along the Matica. The enclosed Slatka vodica spring is another distinctive local feature; it bears a dated inscription. A willow next to the spring is designated as a tree of local significance.

Cultural Landscape and Natural Environment

Rudanovac is part of the cultural landscape along the Matica (Korenička rijeka), a zone of traditional village settlements and cultural-historical features in Plitvice Lakes National Park. This cultural landscape is a form of immovable cultural heritage in which historically characteristic structures are connected with the work of people and nature. The local history can therefore be understood not only through individual houses, but also through the relationship between settlement and landscape.

The botanical heritage includes Ligularia sibirica: Rudanovac is considered a classic locality for this plant species, which is associated with wet meadows and stream banks. The Rudanovačke bare comprise wetland habitats along the Rudanovački potok. Built heritage and natural features are found side by side here, although they address different aspects: the houses and old road section point to the settlement structure, while the wetlands and plant populations define the character of the landscape.

In the wider destination of Općina Plitvička Jezera

In the wider destination of Općina Plitvička Jezera, Plitvice Lakes National Park lies at the heart of the municipality. The park was declared Croatia’s first national park on 8 April 1949. On 26 October 1979, it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List for the outstanding universal value of its tufa formation process. Its forests are home to bears, wolves, and many rare bird species.

The national park is open 365 days a year; public opening hours vary by season. Check the hours for your travel dates. The Plitvice train operates on the 6.5-kilometre route Rapajinka – Velika Poljana – Labudovac for transport within the park. The longer electric boat ride across Lake Kozjak takes 20 minutes.

At Kupalište (P1), visitors can rent wooden rowboats; rowing is permitted only on Lake Kozjak. Check availability before your trip. Thematic tours covering geology, biology, forestry, the lakes, and other topics are offered in coordination with park experts; availability depends on arrangements with the park. Organised visitor groups can reach Čorkova Uvala only using transport organised by the park and accompanied by a ranger.
