When choosing accommodation, Gornji Vaganac can be considered in terms of its distinctive natural and historical features. The protected Kukuruzovićeva špilja is the main attraction, alongside the ancient settlement site of Kukuruzovićeva gradina i pećina. The local road L59136 between Gornji Vaganac and the D1 provides a connection to the road network. These features make the area especially appealing to travelers who take caves and cultural heritage into account when choosing a destination.

Kukuruzovićeva špilja

The protected Kukuruzovićeva špilja lies on the border between Lika and Kordun in Gornji Vaganac. It consists of two connected speleological features: an entrance known locally as Kuruzovića pećina and a spring that speleologists call Kukuruzovića špilja. The entrance and spring therefore have different, commonly used names. The cave is listed under the Natura 2000 code HR2001113; its diving section is approximately 300 meters long. These details describe the cave formation from several angles: its protected status, its structure, and the approximate length of its diving section.

Archaeological and ecclesiastical historical periods

Kukuruzovićeva gradina i pećina is considered an ancient settlement, dating from the 1st to the 2nd century. The site has the existing cultural heritage status E. Nearby in Vaganac, the parish church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross was built by 1810. The origins of the Vaganac parish are associated with the end of the 18th century. This brings together two distinct historical periods: the ancient settlement in Gornji Vaganac and the later ecclesiastical history of Vaganac.

Directions for getting there

Općina Plitvička Jezera: the wider setting

Within the wider destination of Općina Plitvička Jezera, Plitvice Lakes National Park lies at the center of the municipality. It was declared Croatia's first national park on April 8, 1949. On October 26, 1979, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List for the exceptional universal value of its tufa formation process. The national park's forests provide a habitat for bears, wolves, and many rare bird species. The wider region thus combines natural heritage with a distinctive geological history.

The national park is open year-round; public opening hours vary by season. Check the current hours before your visit. Themed tours covering geology, biology, forestry, the lakes, and other subjects are offered in coordination with park experts. Confirm availability to suit your travel dates.

The routes and modes of transport within the national park also offer different ways to explore. The Čorkova Bay Trail is 21 kilometers long. The Oko Mrsinja cycling route runs mostly through the area surrounding the national park and enters it for part of its route. For transport within the park, the Plitvice Train runs the 6.5-kilometer Rapajinka–Velika Poljana–Labudovac route. The longer boat ride across Lake Kozjak takes 20 minutes. Visitors can rent wooden rowboats at Kupalište (P1); rowing is permitted only on Lake Kozjak. Check boat availability before your trip.
