Three walking trails give your plans in Lovinac a concrete framework: Medvidovača is 3,314 metres long, Ričica 2,175 metres and Resnik 6,108 metres. This makes Ričica the shortest and Resnik the longest of the three routes, with Medvidovača in between. The routes of Ričica and Resnik can also be described in more detail.

Walking trails and routes in the municipality

In the Municipality of Lovinac, the Ričica walking trail runs along the northern bank of the Ričica River. The 2,175-metre route lies between the bridges on the roads near Matijevići and at Mašića most. The Resnik walking trail begins on the southern side of the mountain, on the access road to the hamlet of Matijevići. From there, it runs in two directions across the southern and western or northern sides of the mountain to the summit of Resnik. Its total length is 6,108 metres.

Along Resnik, there are signposts and information boards, as well as tables and benches for resting. The route lengths help with comparison, but on their own do not indicate walking time or difficulty. Trail conditions can change. Check them before setting out and confirm the facilities on site.

Nature in the wider destination of the Municipality of Lovinac

Almost half of the Municipality of Lovinac lies within Velebit Nature Park. The Sveto Brdo–Babin vrh Special Reserve, within the municipality, is part of Paklenica National Park. If you are planning a specific activity in a protected area, check the conditions before your trip.

At 833 metres high, Zir in the Lovinačko kraje offers panoramic views in every direction. The distinctive rock on the mountain is a protected natural monument. There is also a 350-metre-long cave with a lake inside Zir. Rokina Cave, also known as Brkića Cave, is located in the mountain above Piplica and is notable for its cave formations.

Cultural history in the Municipality of Lovinac

The parish church of St Michael in Lovinac was built in 1704 and structurally altered in the second half of the 18th century and again in the mid-19th century. In Ričice, the Baroque parish church of St Mary Magdalene dates from 1795; it has architectural and historical value and is an important feature of the local landscape. The two churches thus offer different points of reference for the building history of the Municipality of Lovinac.

The 19th-century Travić Mill lies on the Banica stream. The water of the stream powers its milling mechanism. The stone bridge over the Ričica stream near Lovinac also dates from the 19th century. The medieval cemetery near Štikada contains 23 late-medieval stećak tombstones in situ, as well as the remains of the Temple of the Holy Archangel.

Regional products and events

In the Lovinac area, Lika potatoes, Škripavac cheese, products made from medicinal herbs, honey and local fruit are associated with regional tradition. Wool is also traditionally processed, and local crafts are made using patterns handed down over many generations. Production and availability vary by season and producer.

The gastronomic event Dani sira i ličkog krumpira has been held in the Municipality of Lovinac since 2013. It showcases the culinary qualities of potatoes and cheese, and visitors can taste both products. The traditional Lika dish “pole” is also prepared using different varieties of potatoes. As dates and programmes may vary, check the latest event details before planning your stay around it.

Another event in the wider destination of the Municipality of Lovinac is the three-day cycling festival Srce Velebita. This leisure event includes organised rides with licensed cycling guides through the Velebit Mountains, the Lovinac area and other parts of Lika-Senj County.
