In the broader destination of Općina Brinje

The municipality of Brinje stretches between the slopes of Velika Kapela and Velebit. Brinje is located on the Jozefinska cesta, the Josephine Road, and on today’s Zagreb–Split motorway (A1). This provides an overview of the broader destination of Općina Brinje. Its varied points of interest include buildings in Brinje as well as trails and natural attractions throughout the municipality.

Buildings and history in Brinje

The medieval noble castle of Sokolac is in the center of Brinje and was built in the early 15th century by the Frankopans, the Counts of Krk. The entrance tower and the two-story castle chapel of the Holy Trinity have survived. Since June 2007, the permanent exhibition “Plemićki grad Sokolac” has been housed in the chapel’s lower level. It provides information about the castle and the role of the Frankopans in Croatian history.

Brinje is also home to two 14th-century religious buildings with distinct features. The Gothic Church of St. Vid stands near the center at the foot of Humac hill and is now occasionally used as a burial chapel. The Chapel of St. Fabian and St. Sebastian is a protected late Romanesque religious building and is designated a cultural monument in the highest protection category.

Other landmarks in the center include the stone bridge on Jozefinska cesta and a bronze statue. The bridge was built in 1801 and has a sundial. The statue depicts a miner and is by sculptor Kosta Angelini Radovani.

Visits to exhibitions in Brinje also require prior registration: this applies to Sokolac and to the Collection of Folk Heritage of the Municipality of Brinje. This permanent exhibition comprises more than 1,200 exhibits. You can register for either visit by calling 053 700 407 or 099 283 4740. Confirm the contact details before your trip.

Hiking trails and nature in the municipality

The Brinjski prsten is an 18.5 km circular educational hiking trail on the Brinje–Zarin–Siničić Cave–Brinje route. One section runs along the ridge of the Škamnica mountain range to the highest peak of the Brinje basin: Zarin, at 828 m. The described route also includes the Kozjak viewpoint. Its stated length provides a concrete distance for anyone planning a hike by kilometers.

For cycling, the local Brinjski mineri 1 and 2 trails are part of Brinje’s tourist offering. Check trail conditions and signage locally. The via ferratas in Staro Brinje are described as suitable for climbing in both winter and summer; check the conditions for each season locally.

At Brodić Lake in the municipality of Brinje, there is a picnic area with a walking path, lighting, and benches for outdoor recreation. Check the condition of the facilities before your visit. The lake is rich in fish and natural vegetation. Species mentioned there include carp, grass carp, pike, and crayfish.
