Lipice consists of twelve hamlets in hills covered with coniferous forest; fruit growing and a festival celebrated in both summer and winter are also part of the picture. This combination helps you tailor your stay to your own interests. If you would like to include Ivanja in your travel plans, the time of year is an important starting point; the landscape and fruit growing characterize the place regardless. When looking for a holiday apartment, these features can help you get a sense of Lipice as a destination.

Landscape and Fruit Growing

The twelve hamlets lie among hills covered with coniferous forest. Fruit growing is also part of Lipice’s character: the local soil and climate are considered particularly suitable for growing fruit. Here, a forested hilly landscape meets an agricultural character. If you choose a destination based on its landscape and agriculture, these are two distinct points of interest.

Ivanja and the Church in the Valley

Ivanja, the local feast of Saint John, is considered Lipice’s most important festival. It is celebrated twice a year, in summer and winter; the specific dates may vary. If you would like to plan your trip around Ivanja, check the date of the festival in advance. The townscape also bears the mark of Saint John: the Church of Saint John the Baptist, built in 1878, stands in the valley. Its year of construction provides a concrete historical reference alongside the seasonal festivities.

Beyond the Town: Općina Brinje

The municipality of Brinje, within the wider destination of Općina Brinje, extends between the slopes of Velika Kapela and Velebit. If you would also like to explore places in Brinje, you will find a dedicated hiking trail and historic buildings there.

The Brinjski prsten is an 18.5 km circular educational and hiking trail on the Brinje–Zarin–Siničić Cave–Brinje route. Its longer section runs along the ridge of the Škamnica mountains to the highest peak of the Brinje Basin, Zarin (828 m), and the Kozjak viewpoint. Its length, route and named destinations are useful points of reference when planning a hike in the wider destination of Općina Brinje.

A cultural highlight in Brinje is the medieval noble castle of Sokolac in the town center. It was built in the early 15th century by the Frankopans, the Counts of Krk. The entrance tower and the two-storey castle chapel of the Holy Trinity have been preserved. Since June 2007, the chapel’s lower level has housed the permanent exhibition “Plemićki grad Sokolac,” which provides information about the castle and the role of the Frankopans in Croatian history.

Another facet of Brinje’s architectural history is the stone bridge in the center, on Jozefinska cesta. It was built in 1801 and features a sundial. Its year of construction and design feature give the structure a distinctive historical character alongside Sokolac Castle.

The Brinje municipal folk heritage collection is also a permanent exhibition and comprises more than 1,200 items. Visits to Sokolac and the collection are possible by prior arrangement at 053 700 407 or 099 283 4740; check the contact details before your trip.
