Zagorska Sela brings together archaeological traces, historic buildings and routes in the Sutla region, appealing to a range of different travel interests. At the Ĺ piÄŤak settlement site, the story reaches far back into prehistory; churches and manor houses reveal different architectural styles and dated features. The area also offers the Sutla cycling route and a cross-border tourism zone. Plan your trip around the themes that interest you most, rather than turning individual places into a fixed route too soon.

Archaeology in BojaÄŤno

Ĺ piÄŤak in BojaÄŤno, Krapina-Zagorje, is an elevated archaeological settlement. Its occupation layers date from the Late Bronze Age to the Early Iron Age. Finds include traces of prehistoric houses, pottery sherds, spindle whorls, grinding stones, animal bones and a finely worked stone axe. This variety offers several points of interest if you are curious about the history of a settlement site: alongside traces of dwellings are objects from different aspects of everyday life. The site can therefore be explored not only through its chronological context, but also through the range of documented finds.

Castle, school and manor house

Dvorac Miljana stands on a slope east of the Sutla, within Općina Zagorska Sela; in Sutlanska Poljana, it is protected as an immovable cultural property under designation Z-2238. Within the wider destination of Općina Zagorska Sela, Miljana Castle was first mentioned in 1597 as property of the Rattkay family. The school building in Zagorska Sela is a two-storey structure from the late 19th century, with Historicist details, and is protected as an immovable cultural property under designation Z-2765. Kurija Poklek, by contrast, is a single-storey manor house from the 18th century with Baroque features; the house is surrounded by a park and protected as an immovable cultural property under designation Z-3512. The comparison highlights different forms and periods: on one hand, the multi-storey school with its Historicist detail; on the other, the single-storey manor house with its park and Baroque features. This lets you distinguish buildings not only by age, but also by architecture.

Churches with their own stories in time

The parish church of St Catherine is in the wider destination of Općina Zagorska Sela, on a hill above the road from Klanjec towards Miljana and Veliki Tabor. It was built in 1691 on the foundations of an older church. Inside are a wooden Baroque statue of St Catherine dating from 1649 and Baroque pulpit figures; the organ dates from 1864, and the bell tower was built in 1829. A Galjuf family manor house from the 18th century stands on the adjacent ridge. These dates refer to different parts and furnishings, not to a single construction date.

The single-nave church of St Anne in Sutlanska Poljana was built in 1810 and stands on a hilltop plateau. A Way of the Cross leads to it from an 18th-century parish house. Kapela Sv. Ivan in Ivanić Miljanski offers a different architectural feature: it is Gothic, and its tower dates from 1694. These places differ in their architectural form, setting and historical connections. If you are exploring church architecture, you can use these features to guide your choices.

Cycling route and cross-border region

The Sutla cycling route runs through the Sutla Valley, passing through Zagorska Sela along the Slovenian border. In the wider destination of Općina Zagorska Sela, the tourism zone “Sutla – Valley of Health Springs” was opened in 2004 together with the neighbouring Slovenian municipality of Podčetrtek. The concept focuses on walking and cycling routes, as well as waterways leading to attractions on both sides of the Croatian-Slovenian border. The cycling route describes a specific course through the valley, while the tourism zone provides a broader framework for different types of routes. For specific activities, check crossings, facilities and operating conditions locally.
