Miljana brings together castle history, Rococo frescoes and a 42-kilometre cycling loop that passes the castle. The area lies beside the Sutla River; the park around Dvorac Miljana is also protected as a monument of garden architecture. This brings a distinctive building and its pictorial decoration together with a separate landscape and cycling connection. When planning your visit, you can focus on cultural history or outdoor activity.

Miljana Castle: Architecture and Frescoes

Dvorac Miljana is a single-storey castle with four wings and an arcaded courtyard. The arcades give the courtyard a spacious, articulated design. The Rococo-style fresco cycle includes allegorical scenes and landscapes. These two groups of subjects offer different perspectives: allegories use symbolic imagery, while landscapes foreground depictions of nature. The cycle is attributed to A. Lerchinger and his collaborators.

The history can also be placed in a specific context: Dvorac Miljana was first mentioned in 1597 as property of the Rattkay family. The year relates to the castle’s ownership history and does not describe the architectural features of the present building.

Park, Sutla and Cycling Loop

Park oko dvorca Miljana, the park around Miljana Castle, covers 1.75 hectares and has been designated a protected monument of garden architecture since 1973. The park is therefore a subject in its own right alongside the castle architecture: its area and protection category relate to the garden, while the wings and arcades characterise the building itself.

The easy Dolinom rijeke Sutle circular route is 42 kilometres long, follows paved roads and is designated for road or trekking bikes. Along the way, it passes the Baroque Miljana Castle on a hillside beside the river. This distinction is useful when planning your ride: 42 kilometres refers to the circular route, while the castle is one point along it. Check current route conditions before setting off.

Cross-border context

The Sutla tourism zone supports travel on foot, by bicycle and on the water across the Croatian-Slovenian border. It connects natural, thermal and cultural attractions on both sides. As a regional initiative, the “Sutla – Valley of Health Springs” tourism zone was launched in 2004 together with the neighbouring Slovenian municipality of Podčetrtek. Check individual border crossings and facilities before travelling.

Cultural landmarks in Općina Zagorska Sela

In the wider destination of Općina Zagorska Sela, the Church of St Catherine of Alexandria in Zagorska Sela is a historical landmark in its own right: it was built in 1691 on the foundations of an older church. In Sutlanska Poljana, a Way of the Cross leads from the parish house, built in the 18th century, to the Church of St Anne.

At the archaeological site of Ĺ piÄŤak in BojaÄŤno, a Late Bronze Age settlement has been documented; the site is listed as an immovable individual cultural property. A tourism guide from 2021 describes walking or cycling routes through green hills and natural landscapes to Ĺ piÄŤak, where it notes a viewpoint. The wider destination thus brings together a range of historical points of interest: a church, archaeological evidence and walking and cycling routes.
