Sveti Križ Začretje lies on a hill in the Krapinčica valley, where the stream flows into the Šemnica and the Pačetina. Its location gives the town a distinctive landscape setting, while its cultural attractions range from a 12th-century parish church to art and ethnographic collections. The town is also a clear starting point for exploring by bike: cycling route 226 starts and ends in the centre. Sveti Križ Začretje is on the Zagreb–Macelj road, roughly halfway between Zabok and Krapina.
Church, Castle and Different Periods
The parish church in Sveti Križ Začretje dates from the 12th century. It houses the sculpture “Oplakivanje Krista”, which was created in the late 15th or first half of the 16th century. The two works thus represent different periods: the medieval church and a later work of art. Sveti Križ Začretje Castle was built at the end of the Baroque period, in several phases. The castle houses the Museum of Heritage Culture and Memory. Visits to the castle must be arranged in advance by phone; before travelling, check whether a visit is possible on your chosen date and at what time.
Art and Everyday Culture at Žitnica
The Žitnica building, which houses the Žitnica Museum, was built in 1796. The Ivan Lovrenčić Gallery in the museum contains 16 paintings, 30 drawings and 53 prints donated by Ivan Lovrenčić to his hometown. The museum also presents ethnographic exhibitions by the “Zvirek” group: “From Hemp to Folk Costume”, “My Grandmother’s House” and “Christmas”. At Žitnica, an art collection with clearly defined groups of works sits alongside exhibitions on different ethnographic themes. Another gallery is dedicated to Rudi Stipković and displays 325 original works by the cartoonist; visits are possible by prior arrangement.
Cycling, Views and Garden Architecture
Cycling route 226, “Okolicom Začretja”, starts and ends in the centre, in front of the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. After crossing the Krapinica stream, it reaches the “Za-Za-Kr” cycle path. For views of the landscape, head to the Saint Vitus viewpoint: from there, the view extends over most of Zagorje and the surrounding mountains. The viewpoint can be reached by an asphalt road that branches off the old Sveti Križ Začretje–Mirkovec–Zabok road in Ciglenica Zagorska. In Švaljkovec, the pear avenue offers a different point of interest: it is a monument of garden architecture.
