In Legrad, protected Baroque art, memorial sites and cycling routes meet a landscape shaped by the confluence of the Mura and Drava. The town is a suitable starting point for incorporating cultural history and routes along the Drava into your travel plans.
Church, collections and memorial sites
The Church of the Holy Trinity was built between 1769 and 1784 and is a protected cultural monument. Its organs and furnishings are also protected. Its late Baroque appearance earned it the local nickname “Cathedral of Podravina.” The building thus combines a clearly defined historical timeframe with a distinctive local name.
Various collections offer further insights into life in earlier times. The Legradska hiĹľa ethnographic collection comprises several hundred exhibits depicting life in Legrad in the past. The school museum is housed in the old school building and displays teaching materials, books and old records from earlier times. The memorial collection of the volunteer fire brigade documents the history of the brigade, founded in 1884; it includes a flag from 1899, considered one of the oldest surviving fire brigade flags in Croatia.
The memorial room for Marija Bango is dedicated to the life and work of the writer and educator from Legrad. It opened as an exhibition space on January 26, 2018. The Graffiti Ranch street art project offers a different perspective on the town: it began in 2012, and buildings and fences were decorated with colorful works at artists’ gatherings. Together, these themes paint a picture that ranges from church architecture and everyday history to contemporary art.
Landscape and route choices
The confluence of the Mura and Drava lies northeast of Legrad. Nearby is the Veliki Pažut special ornithological reserve, which is part of the Mura-Drava Regional Park and Croatia’s ecological network. The Halasz Csarda recreation area is also at the confluence; it includes SIP Beach. The environmental association installed swings, seesaws and a volleyball court at Halasz Csarda. If you are planning a beach visit or want to use specific facilities, check the current situation.
For cycling trips, the routes differ mainly in their connections and endpoints. The Drava Route connects Legrad with Pitomača, runs along the Drava and leads to Halasz Csarda. The Drava Bike passes through Legrad and ends at the confluence near the town. The Drava Route opened in 2002 as the region’s first signposted cycle path and is part of the international EuroVelo 13 cycling corridor, also known as the Iron Curtain Trail. Check the current route before setting off.
In the wider destination of Općina Legrad
Beyond the town of Legrad, Općina Legrad also offers a natural setting for recreation: about one third of its area lies within the protected Mura-Drava Regional Park. The artificial lake Šoderica has developed distinctive aquatic and wetland vegetation. It serves as a breeding and wintering ground for birds and provides habitat for many other aquatic and wetland animals.
On the lake’s northern shore within Općina Legrad is a 1.5-kilometer promenade with lighting, benches and waste bins. The visitor project also included two viewpoints; two children’s playgrounds were built beside the promenade. A 2023 plan describes the northern shore as the main summer bathing area for people from the wider surrounding area. If swimming or spending time on the promenade is part of your plans, check the current conditions in advance.
Events may also factor into your choice of travel dates. The regularly held “Ljeto na Šoderici” program has been running since 2009; it includes sport fishing competitions, eco-canoeing, concerts and theater. The SHOWderica program features, among other things, beach volleyball tournaments, water games, environmental workshops and open-air cinema. There is also an adventure park and a paintball area by the lake. Individual editions, dates and activities may vary, so check the current program before making specific plans.
Legrad can thus be considered in light of your own priorities: the protected church and collections add a cultural focus, while the cycling routes offer different connections along the Drava. Those wishing to extend their stay to the wider Općina Legrad will find Šoderica an additional destination in its own right for nature and events.
