Vojnić offers culture in the town; hiking and historical destinations lie in the wider area of the Municipality of Vojnić. When choosing accommodation, it helps to distinguish between these: the cinema, library and parish church are part of a visit to the town, while many trails and historic sites are destinations in the Municipality of Vojnić. This lets you decide what to focus on before planning individual routes and visits.
Culture in the town
The Kralj Petar Svačić Cultural Centre in Vojnić brings together the local cinema and library. It hosts films, theatre, concerts, workshops and educational activities. One recurring example is Filmski Uskrs i Vaskrs: the programme includes film screenings, a filmmaking workshop and a discussion about children and film in small communities. The activities may vary from one edition to another, so check the programme for the specific event if you are planning your visit around it.
The Vojnić Library with reading room is the municipality’s cultural and information centre, offering access to knowledge, information and cultural content. The Church of Saint Anthony of Padua stands in the centre of Vojnić, serves as the parish centre and was consecrated in 2011. Together, these places offer a glimpse of the town’s cultural and religious life without requiring you to attend an event.
Hiking and nature in the Municipality of Vojnić
In the wider municipal area, Petrova Gora—with its beech, fir, oak and hornbeam forests, streams and springs—shapes the landscape. The area also has diverse flora and fauna, including species of ornithological importance. Petrovac Ornithological Park is located at the summit. A signposted trail with information panels about the birds living there leads to it; an observation tower is used to watch birds and other animals. As facilities may change, it is advisable to check their current status before planning a visit specifically to see them.
The red and green Petrova Gora loops both start and end at Lovački dom Muljava; each is listed as taking about four hours to walk. The Rimski put educational trail offers a different planning measure: it is a 2,600-metre circular route at an elevation of 230 to 320 metres, also starting and ending at Muljava. It passes through dense beech, sessile oak and chestnut forest. While the loops are described by approximate walking time, the Rimski put is specified by distance and elevation range. The green trail also leads from the educational trail via the Rimski put to the Petrovac plateau, passes historic sites on Veliki and Mali Petrovac, and descends to Kraljev grob.
Another specific option is the Kraljev Put educational trail, which is adapted for wheelchair users and blind visitors and includes Braille interpretations. This information applies to this particular trail; it does not describe all trails in Petrova Gora generally.
History and milling traditions
The wider area of the Municipality of Vojnić contains historic destinations from different periods. The remains of the Pauline Monastery of St Peter on Mali Petrovac date to 1303 or 1304; it is considered one of Croatia’s oldest Pauline monasteries. The Central Partisan Hospital complex in Pišin Gaj was built between 1942 and 1943 and comprised 32 buildings. It is considered well preserved and suitable for visits. Check the conditions on site before making a special trip.
Kraljev grob is traditionally associated with the death of King Petar Svačić in 1097. A memorial plaque marks the site, which is accessible via a gravel road. Mills are also part of the cultural heritage of the Municipality of Vojnić: Mlin Žuti Put Radonja is a preserved example of traditional milling and offers insight into water-powered grain processing. The mill is accessible by private vehicle via a well-maintained gravel road; conditions can change seasonally. Built in 1938, Škrgića Mill is still in operation. If you are making a special trip to see it, check its operating status beforehand.
Events and getting there
Events can also influence when you visit. Green Night is a recurring two-day sporting event with a cultural programme and traditional Kordun dishes. The Gljivarijada in Muljava takes place every year in October and includes an exhibition of edible and inedible mushrooms as well as an exchange of knowledge. Check the specific date for the year in question before planning your trip around it.
Vojnić bus station is the municipality’s main public transport hub; basic connections run to Karlovac, Topusko and nearby settlements. As service frequency may change, check the timetable before departure. The Barilović–Vojnić–Petrova Gora state cycling route also passes through Vojnić; route information should be checked regularly.
