A trail of approximately three kilometres circles Lake Petnja. Information boards depict plants and animals; the water also shapes another side of the Municipality of Sibinj: the lake is an artificial reservoir with a significant fish population and is suitable for angling tourism. Landscape, activity and local traditions offer different discoveries side by side here.

By the lake and on the slopes of Dilj

The Municipality of Sibinj lies on the southern slopes of Dilj, west of Slavonski Brod. In the north of the municipality, a largely forested, uninhabited hilly area begins. Its highest point is at 461 metres. Thus, the lake and the wooded heights form different landscapes within the same municipality.

Lake Petnja offers two clear starting points for planning: the trail around the water and the fish population, which is significant for angling tourism. The designated route circles the lake; boards depicting plants and animals give it a nature-focused aspect. The trail is approximately three kilometres long.

Several cycling routes from the “Slavonia Bike” project also pass through the Municipality of Sibinj. They add to the local range of active experiences, but are not the same as the trail around Lake Petnja. For orientation, it helps to distinguish between the short, approximately three-kilometre loop around the lake and the cycling routes that pass through the municipality.

Churches and historical traces

The Church of St John the Baptist in Sibinj was built in the 18th century and is protected by the Ministry of Culture. Its protected inventory includes furnishings in the late Baroque style of the 18th century. Its construction date and style give this site a specific place in the cultural history of the municipality.

Another protected church stands in Grgurevići: the Church of St Philip and St James was built in 1821 and is protected as a cultural monument. In Brčino, another site was added in 2024. On 17 September of that year, the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was placed under temporary protection, beginning the process of establishing it as cultural heritage. The three churches thus represent different historical periods and forms of protection.

The medieval Petnja fortress is also among the municipality’s historical traces. Its archaeological site was first mentioned in 1258 in a confirmation charter by King Béla IV. The outline of the fortress walls is visible in the landscape. This links an early written mention with a still discernible feature in the landscape.

Associations, festivals and local cuisine

Cultural tradition is also reflected in local associations. KUD Slavonija was founded in 1984 in Gornji Andrijevci. KUD Šokica has been active since 1915 and organises the folk event “Uskrsni ponedjeljak” in Slobodnica. Alongside the built and natural features of these places, such associations add a cultural dimension.

Since 2008, KUD Slavonija has organised the gastro-folkloric “Kukuruzijada” on the first Saturday in August. Its main speciality is boiled and roasted corn. The date makes the event a seasonal point of reference; if you would like to include it in your plans, check the specific event dates in advance.

Other culinary events bring food together with local traditions. The traditional “Ribička večer na Petnji” is associated with Lake Petnja; at the event, visitors are offered fiš and spit-roasted carp. The seventh “Čobanijada” took place in Sibinj Park in 2025, where visitors could sample čobanac. In December, KUD Tomislav from Sibinj organises the traditional folkloric and cultural “Božićni koncert”.

Different scales for active exploration

A different scale is represented by the non-competitive “Putevima sibinjskih žrtava” marathon. It was first held in 2015; the 21.5-kilometre route runs from Jakačina Mala through Bilice, Grižići and Stari Slatinik to Sibinj. By comparison, the trail around Lake Petnja, at approximately three kilometres, is much shorter.

The Municipality of Sibinj therefore offers several distinct themes to choose from: the lakeside trail with its depictions of plants and animals, cycling routes through the municipality, churches dating from different centuries, and events with a folkloric or culinary focus. You can decide which of these will be the focus of your trip based on your interests and the specific event dates.
