Škrip offers several ways to explore the history of Brač: an island museum with archaeological and ethnographic collections, historic churches and a museum dedicated to the olive oil tradition. If you want to combine architectural history and everyday culture when choosing a place to stay, Škrip offers specific themes to explore. The quarrying history in the area around Splitska adds a distinct connection beyond the town itself.

Museum and Island History

The Museum of the Island of Brač is housed in a complex with Illyrian walls, a Roman mausoleum and a Croatian fortification. The complex also includes the Radojković Tower, which dates from the 16th century. Here, architectural evidence from different eras comes together in one place—a distinctive way to get to know Škrip through its history.

The museum’s collections range from Roman, Late Antique and Early Medieval stone monuments and sculptures to ethnographic objects associated with agriculture, livestock farming and stoneworking on Brač. The shift between archaeological evidence and objects from these traditions draws attention both to earlier eras and to the island’s work and way of life.

Castle and Churches

The castle of the Cerinić family stands on Škrip’s main square. Two Roman sarcophagi stand in front of the castle. The Church of the Holy Spirit is located in Škrip’s cemetery; it dates from the 4th century and is a three-aisled basilica. “Three-aisled” describes an interior divided into three longitudinal sections—a concise architectural explanation that can be helpful when viewing the building.

The 18th-century Church of Saint Helena represents a different period. Together, the castle and churches show why Škrip’s architectural history cannot be reduced to a single era: Roman traces, an early-dated church building and an 18th-century structure stand alongside one another as distinct historical themes. If you are interested in architecture, this contrast offers a focus apart from the museum collections.

Olive Oil and Cultural Remembrance

Muzej uja is dedicated to the history of olive growing on Brač and the traditional production of olive oil. An oil mill in Škrip was converted into this museum by July 2013, and it opened to the public at that time. If you are planning a visit, check the current visitor arrangements in advance. The museum complements the archaeological and architectural themes with an agricultural tradition of the island.

The čakavske riči Štefe Pulišelić festival also commemorates a poet from Škrip: Stjepan Pulišelić. Alongside buildings and collections, language and literary remembrance are therefore among the town’s cultural themes.

Quarrying History in the Surrounding Area

Outside Škrip, the 1.1-kilometre Hercules themed hiking trail runs from the foot of Splitska’s horseshoe-shaped harbour to the Rasohe quarry. A marked path to the quarry gives visitors access to the relief of Hercules there. The Roman quarries above Splitska also supplied stone for the construction of Diocletian’s Palace in Split. This offers two perspectives on stoneworking on Brač: the museum displays objects from the island’s stoneworking tradition, while the area around Splitska provides a direct connection to the quarry and relief. Rasohe is outside Škrip, so the path and quarries are separate points of interest in the surrounding area, not attractions within the town itself.

Choosing Škrip as a Place to Stay

Škrip’s cultural highlights can be a factor when choosing a place to stay: the museum, buildings, churches and olive oil history are the main attractions in the town. The Hercules trail, relief and quarries broaden the picture to include the area around Splitska, but are outside Škrip. This can help you decide whether you want your stay to focus mainly on the town’s history and culture or whether to include the nearby area in your travel plans as well.
