Turpan brings together its historic cultural district and an urban cultural and tourism project, with additional architectural landmarks and landscapes in the surrounding area. To help choose where to stay, it is useful to understand the locations: New Town, the Turpan Museum and the Grand Bazaar are in Turpan; the Su Gong Pagoda, the Karez Museum and Grape Valley are nearby.
Urban Culture and Historical Heritage
The Turpan Museum is located at 1268 Munar Street in Gaochang District. This address gives a specific location within Turpan. The historic New Town cultural district is considered evidence of cultural diversity and the coexistence of several ethnic groups. A city report dated March 22, 2026, described it as the region’s only historic urban area where traditions had remained alive up to that point; restoration work was underway at the time.
The Turpan Grand Bazaar opened as an urban cultural and tourism project. Its platform is used to showcase Hetian jade, decorative stones and rootwood art. This adds another urban venue with a specific exhibition function for these art and stone categories to the city’s historical themes.
Su Gong Pagoda: Design and Dimensions
The Su Gong Pagoda, also called the Emin Minaret, is located in Munar Village near Turpan, two kilometers east of the city. It was built in 1777 and is 37 meters tall. Its 72 steps lead up a central spiral staircase made of bricks to the top. This gives a sense of both its height and a distinctive feature of its design, without linking the measurements to a claim about access to the top.
The pagoda is considered the largest surviving historic tower in Xinjiang and the only Islamic-style tower among China’s 100 famous towers. This classification connects a specific architectural form with a distinctive position among the historic towers described.
Karez Heritage and the Surrounding Landscape
The nearby Karez Museum uses images, dynamic models and exhibits to present the structure, distribution, functions and historical development of the karez system, as well as related research findings. These different forms of presentation range from the system’s structure to its history and the research conducted on it.
Another nearby place with a similar name is Karez Amusement Park. It is located in the second village of Yar Township, about five kilometers from Turpan and one kilometer from National Highway 312. These details help orient visitors to the park, which should be considered a separate place in the area around Turpan.
The Grape Valley scenic area near Turpan is also in the surrounding area. It is a gorge in the Flame Mountain region, through which the Buiyuluk River flows. Its main water source is snowmelt from the high mountains. The area is classified as a national 5A-rated scenic area; this rating is a historical classification. The gorge, river and water source give the place a clear geographical context.
