Yancheng offers several distinct ways to explore its history: the New Fourth Army Memorial Museum is dedicated to the history of the army, while the China Sea Salt Museum covers sea salt production and salt transport. Other attractions include Huai Opera on a theater boat, nighttime river cruises, and a large urban park. You can therefore shape your trip around cultural history, performances, or the city’s landscape.

Museums with Different Areas of Focus

The New Fourth Army Memorial Museum is located downtown and is one of the city’s major red tourism attractions. It is a national first-class museum and is devoted to the history of the New Fourth Army. Its seven exhibition halls are complemented by a hall for generals and commanders, a calligraphy and painting gallery, and an audio-visual hall.

The collection includes nearly 1,000 historical photographs and more than 800 artifacts, including weapons and equipment. The themed galleries and collection offer different ways to explore the history of the New Fourth Army. Those interested in this aspect of the city’s history will find a clearly defined focus here.

The China Sea Salt Museum is also located downtown, between the old salt transport route of the Chuanchang River and the historic Fangong Embankment. It is the only sea salt museum in China approved by the State Council to present the history of sea salt culture. Its exhibits systematically cover the development of Chinese sea salt production and the history of salt transport. Wax figures, sculptures, and dioramas depict traditional salt-making methods and the lives of salt workers. Unlike the Memorial Museum, the focus here is on production and transport, not the history of the New Fourth Army.

Salt History on Stage and by the River

At Salt Town Water Street, you can enjoy Huai Opera on a theater boat; performances regularly begin at 7:30 p.m. It is worth checking the specific performance time again before your visit. Visitors can also sample local specialties at the riverside shops. This venue combines a performance with an opportunity to discover regional cuisine.

The Sea Salt Historic and Cultural Zone offers another way to explore the history of salt transport: nighttime boat trips take place on the Chuanchang River. Along the way, visitors learn about the history of the salt transport river, which is more than 2,100 years old. The museum and river cruise offer different perspectives: one presents salt production and transport systematically, while the other tells the river’s story during a nighttime boat trip.

Cityscape and Other Highlights

Yandu Park lies in the center of Yancheng, is connected to the old course of the Chuanchang River, and covers 486 hectares. Its scale sets it apart from the thematically focused museums and gives the cityscape a place of its own in the selection. Euro-style Flower Street adds another dimension as a European-inspired district developed as a destination for urban micro-tourism.

This offers a useful distinction for planning your trip: the museums make good themed highlights for military or salt history, while the theater boat and nighttime river cruise offer other ways to experience culture and history. The park and Flower Street, in turn, add the cityscape and a European-inspired district to the mix. You can tailor your trip to whichever side of Yancheng interests you most.
