If you’re looking for a hotel in Lianyungang, first consider the interests you’d like to shape your stay. Coastal and mountain landscapes sit alongside a varied cultural history here. The Old Street, the museum and Kongwang Mountain represent different historical themes; Lian Island and Huaguo Mountain add distinctive landscape features. This gives you a way to explore Lianyungang according to the things that interest you most.

Coast and Peaks on Different Scales

The Lian Island Scenic Area includes Jiangsu Province’s largest rocky island. Its coastline measures 17.66 kilometers, and the scenic area covers 8.1 square kilometers. These figures describe two different scales: the length of the coastline and the total area of the scenic area. Lian Island was added to the newly established national list of 5A tourist attractions.

Another landscape landmark is Yunv Peak in the Huaguo Mountain Scenic Area. At 624.4 meters, it is the highest peak in Jiangsu Province. Lianyungang’s landscape can therefore be understood through both an extensive coastline and a single, precisely measured peak.

Kongwang Mountain: Geology and History

Kongwang Mountain Scenic Area is a national 4A-rated tourist attraction. Its sights include the ruins of the ancient city of Kongwang Mountain. Its geology is also distinctive: the mountains consist mainly of granite and gneiss, and their geological history dates back 1.8 billion years. These details give the area a geological dimension alongside its historical one.

Among its historical features are Buddhist rock carvings from the Eastern Han period, nearly 2,000 years old. Historians call them the “first rock Buddha of the nine regions.” Also dating from the Han period is a fully sculpted stone elephant statue carved from a block of granite. It is considered China’s largest fully sculpted stone elephant statue and the “first elephant of China.” The carvings and statue are distinct examples of the area’s cultural heritage.

Historic City Sites: Museum and Old Street

The Lianyungang Museum preserves more than 10,000 cultural artifacts. Its exhibitions include local history, Han-period tomb documents, the culture of the Journey to the West, and the art of stone inscriptions. Its themes therefore range from regional history to literary culture and inscriptions. Admission to the museum is permanently free.

The Old Street on Minzhu Road is in central Lianyungang and was formerly called Zhongshan Road. It is 650 meters long and is rated a national 3A tourist attraction. The street is home to 18 municipal heritage protection units. The publicly accessible area also includes exhibition halls, among them the Bell Tower History Museum, the Haizhou Good People Museum, the Folklore Museum, the Dahua Cultural Exchange Center, the Master Zhou Cunyu Art Museum, and the Municipal Intangible Cultural Heritages Museum. As opening arrangements at individual venues may change, check which ones are open before visiting.
