Wenchang’s cultural attractions range from an individual family residence to an entire arcade street and the stucco decorations of a Confucius Temple. This change in scale makes the sites different points of reference when choosing your destination: the residence represents a family building from 1919, 文南老街 is a streetscape with houses dating from the 1920s, and the temple offers ornamental details and a seasonal schedule.

A Family Residence and a Historic Street

The Chen Xingming Residence is in the Wencheng subdistrict of Wenchang, in the second village of Yimen, under the Nanhai Village Committee. The Chen family residence was financed and built in 1919 by the brothers Chen Zhilian and Chen Zhisui, who lived overseas. It is a brick-and-wood structure with a tiled roof and what is known as a hard-mountain roof. The terms offer different clues: brick and wood refer to the building materials, a tiled roof to the roof covering, and a hard-mountain roof to the roof form. At the Chen residence, therefore, both the construction method and the history of its two builders are part of the site’s story.

文南老街 is on Wen’nan Street in Wencheng subdistrict, Wenchang, and runs along the Wenchang River. More than a hundred surviving Southeast Asian Chinese arcade houses from the 1920s shape the street. The houses were financed by overseas Chinese who had returned home; their architecture combines Chinese, European, and Southeast Asian elements in an external arcade style. 文南老街 is an open-air museum and a living bearer of overseas Chinese culture. Unlike the individual family residence, the focus here is on a larger group of houses and the combination of different architectural elements along a street.

Stucco Motifs and Seasonal Visiting Hours

The gray stucco decorations at Wenchang Confucius Temple have been renovated and repainted. The motifs include clouds, dragons, and phoenixes, among others. A report dated May 23, 2025, gives extended hours each year from May 1 to August 31: ticket sales run from 08:30 to 18:30, closing time is 19:00, and admission ends 30 minutes before closing. Check the current schedule before your trip. For planning purposes, the admission cutoff is what matters, not just the stated closing time. The admission cutoff is therefore also 18:30.

Wenchang as a Cultural Destination

The architectural history of the residence and the houses of 文南老街 differ both in scale and in when they date from: 1919 contrasts with a streetscape of houses from the 1920s. The renovated stucco motifs and seasonal visiting hours at the Confucius Temple offer a different focus. You can therefore assess Wenchang based on whether you are particularly interested in the history of a family building, the variety of a historic street, or decorative cultural details.
