Wuyi Mountain in Fujian encompasses the largest and most representative largely intact forest that brings together the diversity of China’s subtropical forest and southern Chinese rainforest. In the region, this natural perspective is complemented by coastal landscapes, rivers and diverse architectural heritage.
Forests, Water and Tea Traditions

Wuyishan’s tea traditions also follow specific times of year: each year around Jingzhe, the “Calling the Mountain” ritual is held to honor tea. Coastal Routes and Island Views
Officially described in September 2023, Fujian Coastal Scenic Route No. 1 consists primarily of the Fujian section of National Highway G228 and the Pingtan Ecological Loop. From north to south, it passes through Ningde, Fuzhou, Pingtan, Putian, Quanzhou, Xiamen and Zhangzhou. Check the latest route and infrastructure information before setting out.
The Pingtan Coastal Tourism Road is about 48.3 kilometers long and runs along the coast of the main island. It passes ecological coastal stretches, landscapes shaped by marine erosion, island villages and historic sights. The description thus brings together natural and cultural resources along the coast without reducing the route to a single type of landscape.
Kulangsu is accessible only by ferry; check the latest ferry arrangements in advance. The island’s architecture and building styles reflect an exchange of Chinese, Southeast Asian and European architectural and cultural values and traditions. Kulangsu is also the origin and foremost expression of the Amoy Art Deco style.
Granite Formations and River Landscapes
Taimu Mountain National Scenic Area comprises five scenic areas: Taimu Mountain, Jiuli Creek Waterfall, Qingchuan Seaside, Sangyuan Emerald Lake and Fuyao Archipelago. It also includes the two standalone attractions of Liancheng Fortress and Ruiyun Temple. At Taimu Mountain, the landscape is shaped by granite formations, including clusters of peaks and egg-shaped rocks.
Taining is one of the six components of the serial World Heritage property China Danxia. In Taining, the Shangqingxi originates in Chuanli Village, within the administrative area of Shangqing; the river is more than 50 kilometers long. These two details offer different kinds of orientation: Taining is part of a World Heritage property, while the river is described by its source and length.
Cities, Trade and Architectural Heritage
From the 10th to the 14th century, Quanzhou developed into a major maritime trading center in East and Southeast Asia. Quanzhou’s World Heritage property includes religious buildings and statues, ceramic and iron production sites, as well as bridges, docks and pagodas. The Qingjing Mosque is part of this heritage: built in the 11th century, it is one of China’s earliest Islamic buildings.
In downtown Fuzhou, the Sanfang Qixiang Historic and Cultural District preserves the layout of its streets and lanes from the Tang and Song periods with near-complete continuity. Its fishbone pattern makes the street layout itself a distinctive feature of the district.
The Fujian Tulou illustrate another connection between building design and communal life. The houses were built around a central open courtyard for defensive purposes. They had only one entrance and no outward-facing windows below the second floor. At the same time, they served as homes for entire clans and as village units. Defensive function, living space and community organization are all part of the same described building style.
