Xuancheng offers a range of experiences for a trip: Jingting Mountain represents a literary connection that has developed over centuries; the Xuancheng Museum presents cultural history through its collections, and Chinese Alligator Lake is China’s largest conservation base for Chinese alligators. You can shape your choices around culture, mountain scenery or nature conservation.
Jingting Mountain: Peaks and Literary Heritage
Jingting Mountain lies in the northern suburbs of Xuancheng, encompasses 60 peaks and has a main peak, Yifeng, that rises to 317 metres. The name “Poetry Mountain of Jiangnan” reflects the mountain’s centuries-old connection with numerous poems, prose works and paintings. Its cultural significance therefore extends beyond a single literary genre.
For those interested in the views, Cloud Bridge in the Jingting Mountain Scenic Area is another point of interest. A 2022 description says that its views are surpassed only by those from a few pavilions. Check the condition of the facilities before your visit.
Cultural History at the Xuancheng Museum
The Xuancheng Museum was founded in 1988; the new museum building opened in October 2017. It is a general museum and a national second-tier museum, as well as a provincial patriotic education site.
The exhibitions are presented under the theme “A Millennium-old Commandery, Cultural Xuancheng.” The collections include bronze objects from the Shang and Zhou periods, mirrors from the Han and Tang periods, celadon from the Six Dynasties, ceramics from the Xuanzhou Kiln, and objects from the “Four Treasures of the Study.” The collection spans different periods and types of objects: it includes ceramics and metal objects, as well as mirrors and items related to the culture of writing.
Visitor information from 2023 lists opening hours as Tuesday to Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; admission ends at 4:30 p.m. Check for possible holiday exceptions before your visit. A 2023 museum description lists free tours with professional guides, self-guided audio tours, and AR and VR experiences. Check in advance which of these options will be available during your visit.
Habitat and Nature Conservation at Chinese Alligator Lake
Chinese Alligator Lake was established in 1979 and is China’s largest conservation base for Chinese alligators. The site is hilly, with tall trees and shrub vegetation. Ponds, depressions and reservoirs are connected by a network of ditches and waterways; together, they form a suitable habitat for Chinese alligators. The focus on nature conservation here stems from the interplay of the terrain, vegetation and interconnected bodies of water.
Getting Around the City and Heritage Protection
The T1 city tourism bus line is also useful for getting around Xuancheng. A notice dated January 27, 2026, describes it as a circular route that starts and ends at the west forecourt of Xuancheng Railway Station. If you plan to use the line, check the current timetable, as service may change.
Another cultural point of interest is the heritage status of the Twin Pagodas: in January 1988, the State Council designated them as nationally significant protected monuments. Their clearly dated heritage status complements the literary history of Jingting Mountain and the museum’s cultural history collections.
