Anhui can be explored in many different ways: granite peaks rise above a sea of clouds at Mount Huangshan, while ancient villages reveal their own distinctive layouts and architectural history. Cultural collections, inscriptions, and religious sites complete the picture. Which of these aspects interests you most can shape the focus of your trip through the province.

Granite, Clouds, and Trails

Mount Huangshan provides a habitat for locally or nationally endemic plant species, several of which are threatened worldwide. The mountain is also known for its dramatic landscape of granite peaks and rocks rising above a sea of clouds. Well-preserved, well-maintained trails lead to ancient temples and scenic viewpoints. Check current conditions before your visit.

Trails are also central to Jiuhua Mountain: Visitors can hike from Jiuhua Street along the scenic area's tourist stairways and stone paths. Jiuhua Mountain is located in Qingyang County, within the city of Chizhou in Anhui, and is one of China's four sacred Buddhist mountains. Exploring the scenic area is therefore closely connected with its religious significance.

Tianzhu Mountain is located in Qianshan, Anqing, in Anhui Province. Numerous peaks, caves, unusual rocks, and green plants shape its landscape. Its cultural heritage includes steles bearing calligraphy by ancient literati such as Li Bai, a prominent poet of the Tang Dynasty (618–907). Hiking and sightseeing are among the outdoor activities available. Those interested in mountain landscapes will also find a cultural point of reference here.

Ancient Villages and Their Architectural Styles

Xidi offers a glimpse of residential architecture from bygone eras: the village has more than 300 houses, most of which were built during the Ming and Qing periods. The houses also contain collections of valuable calligraphy and handicrafts. Architecture and the works preserved within it can thus be found in the same place.

Hongcun presents a different and particularly vivid village scene. The ancient village has 138 original residences in the Ming and Qing style, with white walls and black tiles. Its overall layout resembles the shape of an ox. Its waterscape includes South Lake, Moon Pond, and winding streams; Principal Street connects South Lake in the south with Moon Pond in the north. Buildings, bodies of water, and the layout of the streets can therefore be seen as interconnected features of the village.

Collections and Religious Traditions

The diverse collection at the Anhui Museum in Hefei ranges from ancient bronzes, pictorial bricks, ceramics, and metalware to scholars' objects, traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy, historical documents, rare books, local handicrafts, and modern art. It also includes around 4,000 artworks by Pan Yuliang (1895–1977). The collection brings together different forms of craftsmanship, painting, and calligraphy, as well as historical and modern art.

The religious associations also differ: Jiuhua Mountain is Buddhist; Mount Qiyun is a sacred Taoist site in Anhui. At Tianzhu Mountain, meanwhile, the calligraphy on the steles refers to ancient literati and to Li Bai. These sites therefore offer different points of connection for a culture-focused trip, without representing the same tradition.
