Talca Province offers a range of discoveries: Cerro La Virgen provides panoramic views over Talca, Reserva Nacional Altos de Lircay leads into the mountain landscapes of San Clemente, and dunes and coastline shape the landscape around Constitución. You’ll also find historic buildings, handicrafts and regional specialties. By tailoring your trip to your own interests, you can choose between nature, outdoor activities and culture.
Views over Talca and mountain trails
The path to Cerro La Virgen crosses the bridge over the Río Claro. From the hill, you can enjoy panoramic views of the city of Talca. At the summit, a statue of the Virgin Mary and a small open-air chapel stand alongside picnic facilities. The viewpoint, chapel and picnic areas give this spot on the edge of the city its own distinctive character.
For hikes in Reserva Nacional Altos de Lircay, there are two routes with distinctly different profiles to choose from. Sendero Laguna del Alto is 14 kilometers long, takes about eight hours in total and is considered challenging. Sendero El Peine is four kilometers long, takes about three hours in total and is rated moderate. Both routes are listed as challenging in winter. The routes therefore differ not only in length but also in their stated level of difficulty outside the winter season.
Reserva Nacional Altos de Lircay is located in the municipality of San Clemente and accommodates mountaineering activities in areas with different levels of difficulty. Cerro El Peine, at 2,700 meters, is the highest peak in the protected area. Visitors interested in mountain landscapes will find both specific trail profiles and a prominent peak within the reserve.
River, lagoon and coastal landscapes
A stretch of the Río Maule near Maule is considered suitable for kayakers with intermediate experience. Laguna Querquel, in the municipality of Maule, combines a landscape described as beautiful with opportunities for fishing and picnicking. The river and lagoon therefore offer different nature experiences: one is a stretch described as suitable for kayakers with intermediate experience, while the other is a place associated with fishing and picnicking.
Near Constitución, the Dunas de Putú stretch for 30 kilometers from the banks of the Río Maule to La Trinchera. The dunes and wetlands of Putú are also associated with trekking, horseback riding and birdwatching. Las Rocas de Constitución is a different coastal area: this 108.4-hectare natural area extends from Los Gringos Beach to the mouth of the Río Maule. The rocks provide nesting grounds for gulls, boobies, cormorants and pelicans. This coastal landscape thus brings together vast dunes and a habitat that is important to several groups of birds.
Local buildings and history
The Santuario Inmaculada Concepción de Corinto stands in Corinto, beside the Río Maule. The current building dates from 1866. In Pelarco, the history of Templo Parroquial San José goes back to 1787; it is considered one of the oldest temples in the Región del Maule. Brick features in the arches of the windows and doors, the columns and the side walls. A brick buttress is another of its described architectural features.
Another testament to the area’s architectural history is Puente sobre el Río Pangue in Talca. It was built between 1878 and 1880 and is considered the only surviving bridge of its kind. The three structures differ in function and date: the Santuario and Templo are religious buildings, while the bridge is an engineering structure that adds to the area’s historic built heritage.
Handicrafts and regional specialties
In the Unihue area, artisans work with clay and willow. Their pieces have been exhibited at national and international fairs. The two materials provide different foundations for their craft: clay is made into ceramics, while willow is used for woven pieces. Chancho en piedra is a typical specialty from Talca; the paste or sauce is made from tomatoes and chili. Wine is another regional highlight: the Ruta del Vino Valle del Maule is listed in Talca as a themed wine route.
Baños Termales Gualleco are located in Gualleco, in the municipality of Curepto. They have basic facilities for mud and water baths, which are attributed with healing properties. Along with handicrafts and local cuisine, this offers another experience beyond landscapes and historic architecture.
