Around Curicó, protected landscapes meet long-established townscapes and living traditions. This contrast is particularly clear at the Reserva Nacional Laguna Torca: here, bodies of water and birdlife sit alongside trails that let you explore the area on foot. In Vichuquén and Licantén, historic town layouts, crafts and religious customs add to the picture.

Laguna Torca: A Waterscape and Birdlife

The Reserva Nacional Laguna Torca is part of a lake system that includes Laguna Torca, Lago Vichuquén and Laguna de Agua Dulce. The latter has no surface outflow and is endorheic. More than 90 bird species are found within the protected area, including the black-necked swan, osprey, Plegadis chihi and coscoroba swan. A photo exhibition at the environmental information center shows some of the avifauna. Older photographs also reveal what the area looked like in the 1960s—a glimpse of its condition at the time alongside the present-day landscape.

The trails vary considerably in length and time required. Sendero Árbol Gigante is 1.4 kilometers long, takes about 45 minutes and is considered easy. Sendero Achupalla is listed as 6 kilometers, about 2.5 hours and moderate in difficulty. At 10 kilometers and about four hours, Sendero La Duna is the longest of the three routes mentioned; it is considered challenging. This lets you choose a hike based on the time available and the level of difficulty you prefer. Trail information and operating conditions may change; check the latest conditions before your visit.

More Trails Near Molina

Parque Nacional Radal Siete Tazas also offers a short, named hike: Sendero Siete Tazas–Salto de la Leona is 1.5 kilometers long, takes about an hour in total and is considered easy. The protected area is located in Molina, in Curicó Province, and was reclassified as a national park on March 27, 2008.

The main access road connects Molina with the Parque Inglés sector. Its first 25 kilometers are paved, while most of the remaining stretch is a gravel road. Since road conditions can change seasonally, it is a good idea to check them before setting out. Information about both protected areas also makes a specific comparison possible: at Laguna Torca, options range from a short loop to a challenging four-hour hike; at Radal Siete Tazas, the focus here is an easy trail that takes about an hour.

Townscapes, Crafts and Customs

In the city of Curicó, the Kiosco Cívico on Plaza de Armas is designated a Monumento Histórico. Built entirely of metal, the structure combines cast iron and wrought iron. Vichuquén, by contrast, is characterized by an open town layout: two parallel streets and three cross streets form the distinctive street network of the town designated as a Zona Típica. There, you can visit artisans who make, among other things, white ceramic vessels, woven textiles and items from plant fibers. Their work also includes carved figures and household objects.

Another way to experience local culture is to visit Lora in the municipality of Licantén. The Baile de Negros takes place there every year on the third Sunday in October. A ritual group honors the Virgin of the Rosary with music and dances. The Baile de los Negros de Lora was recognized as a Tesoro Humano Vivo in 2011 by the Consejo Nacional de la Cultura y las Artes and UNESCO. The fixed date is especially useful for planning a trip; check the details of the celebration in advance.

A Broader Look at the Región del Maule

As regional context, the Valles del Maule y Curicó add to the picture: various wineries offer tours and tastings, while the valleys’ gastronomy invites you to linger. Individual offerings may vary; it is best to confirm a winery’s availability in advance. A stay in the Región del Maule thus combines nature experiences and local history with further opportunities to discover the region’s wine culture.
