The Malleco Viaduct is a major focus of railway history in Collipulli: the bridge is 347.5 meters long, and its rails are 102 meters above the bottom of the gorge. The municipality also has urban history, museums, and cultural crafts. If you plan to visit the monastery or museums, check visiting arrangements in advance.

The Malleco Viaduct: Structure and History

The viaduct's 347.5 meters are divided into five equal sections, each measuring 69.5 meters. It was built as part of a government program to expand the railway network, intended to create a fast connection between southern Chile and the country's central region. At the time, the structure was considered the highest railway bridge in the world and is one of Chile's most significant examples of metal engineering.

Its heritage designation is also clearly dated: by Decree No. 686 of September 25, 1990, the Malleco Viaduct was declared a National Monument in the Historic Monument category. Its dimensions, role in railway expansion, and historical significance offer different ways to appreciate the same structure—from its construction to its importance in connecting different parts of the country.

Urban History and Museums

Another historical landmark is the former council building of the Municipalidad de Collipulli, at the intersection of Cruz and Alcázar streets. It was built between 1917 and 1920 to plans by architect Celindo Muñoz Rivera and housed the municipal administration for decades. The Casa Museo offers another focus: it is a space for the development of culture, art, and the cultural heritage of the municipality of Collipulli.

The Museo HistĂłrico de Collipulli is a private history museum at Bulnes 155. It is housed in a former warehouse where wheat was stored in bulk. The museum preserves historical objects, photographs, and cultural artifacts from local history. A visit therefore explores both the building's former use and the history associated with the objects kept there.

The Museo Particular Radio Viaducto complements this perspective with photographic artifacts, as well as objects and everyday items from Collipulli's early history. The two museums focus on different aspects of the local past: one is a private history museum housed in a former wheat warehouse, while the other presents mementos from the town's early history. Check visiting arrangements in advance.

Monastery, Viewpoint, and River

The Franciscan monastery of San Leonardo de Porto Mauricio de Collipulli is a religious landmark in the urban area. It dates back to 1869. Its simple façade is in the style of the Franciscan order; inside, pillars and naves form a layout typical of the late 19th century. Its architecture offers a different focus from railway construction history. Check with the monastery about visiting arrangements.

The Mirador Viaducto Ferroviario del Malleco can be reached via Ruta 5 Sur or the old road connecting Collipulli with the Bajo de Malleco sector. Check access before setting out. At the viewpoint, activities include observing the landscape and bungee jumping; check in advance whether bungee jumping is currently available.

Along the Malleco River, impoundments at Balneario Sector Bajo RĂo Malleco form natural pools; there is also a swimming school. Check the current status of the facilities mentioned before visiting. The viewpoint and the bathing area offer different experiences: landscape observation and a place to swim in the river, each with practical details you can check in advance.

Mapuche Pottery in the Municipality

Crafts are also part of the municipality of Collipulli's cultural landscape beyond its urban cultural sites. The Alfarería Piutril Santa Ema women's group works in a workshop on Route R-23 in Huapitrío and promotes traditional Mapuche pottery. The works mentioned include metawes, anthropomorphic and zoomorphic vessels, and pieces from the Pitrén and El Vergel cultures. Anthropomorphic refers to human forms, while zoomorphic refers to animal forms; these terms help distinguish the different vessel designs. The workshop and its pottery add another cultural perspective from the municipality to the history of its museums and buildings.
