In Malleco, a variety of ways to spend time outdoors sit alongside distinctive cultural sites, from short, easy trails to longer routes and viewpoints. When planning your trip, specific differences in distance, walking time, and difficulty can help. The season also matters, as trail and access conditions may change.

Choose hiking trails by time and difficulty

In Parque Nacional Tolhuaca, the accessible Sendero Laguna Malleco is 396 meters long. The one-way route takes 30 minutes; it is considered easy and is suitable for people with mobility impairments and older adults. Keep seasonal changes in trail conditions in mind when planning.

For a longer hike, Reserva Nacional Malleco has the Sendero El Jote: it is 3.9 kilometers long, takes 2.5 hours one way, and is of moderate difficulty. The main access to Reserva Nacional Malleco starts at Ruta 5 via Collipulli. In winter, access is restricted to four-wheel-drive vehicles; road and weather conditions may change seasonally.

In Reserva Nacional Malalcahuello, Sendero Piedra Santa is 6.4 kilometers long. The walking time is three hours each way, and the difficulty level is easy. Sendero Piedra del Águila in Parque Nacional Nahuelbuta is also 6.4 kilometers long. It is listed as taking two hours each way and as being of moderate difficulty. From Piedra del Águila, a natural viewpoint, you can see both the Pacific Ocean and the Andes from the summit. So, the same route length does not necessarily mean the same listed walking time or difficulty rating.

Shorter options round out the selection: Sendero Laguna La Totora in Reserva Nacional Nalcas is one kilometer long, takes 30 minutes each way, and is considered easy. In Parque Nacional Conguillío, Sendero Las Araucarias is 923.4 meters long; the one-way walk takes one hour and is of moderate difficulty. The times given are for one direction and are therefore not the total time for a round trip. Seasonal conditions or restrictions may affect your visit.

Protected areas and distinctive landscapes

Reserva Nacional Nalcas covers 13,755 hectares and borders Reserva Nacional Malalcahuello to the south. It is one of the ten SNASPE units that make up the core zones of the Las Araucarias Biosphere Reserve. A highland steppe with araucarias (Araucaria araucana) can be found in Reserva Nacional Alto Biobío. The part of Reserva Nacional China Muerta located in Lonquimay is also part of the Araucarias UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The same is true of the Malleco section of Parque Nacional Conguillío. These protected-area designations offer a different way of seeing the landscape than choosing a single hiking trail.

Specific conditions apply to activities in Nalcas: recreational fishing must be registered and approved by the administration of Reserva Nacional Malalcahuello. The Los Arrieros de Nalcas group also offers specialized tourism there. Before taking part, check the registration and approval requirements and the provider’s terms. Kayaks and boats are rented in Parque Nacional Conguillío in summer; seasonal availability depends on conditions and park operations.

Winter sports are another option: Reserva Nacional Malalcahuello has a ski center under concession to Corralco S.A. The concession and operating conditions may change. If this offering is important to your trip, check the current conditions in advance.

Cultural sites in Purén and Capitán Pastene

In Purén, local history is intertwined with military heritage: Fuerte de la Pacificación de Purén was a Chilean military fort founded by order of Cornelio Saavedra on February 9, 1869. Since 1983, the Museo Mapuche in Purén has presented the history of the Mapuche people. Both sites offer a historical and cultural counterpoint to days focused mainly on hiking trails or protected areas.

Ruta Manzanal is a tourist circuit that includes, among other places, Salto Rayen, Túnel Sanzana, Monumento Natural Contulmo, and Salto la Virgen. These stops make the route another way to shape your stay around cultural and scenic destinations; its components and visitor arrangements may change. In Capitán Pastene, visitor attractions include a mix of Italian and Mapuche cultures. This lets you plan your trip around different interests without combining hikes and cultural sites into a fixed itinerary.
