Tocopilla can be explored from three distinct perspectives: the traditional Caleta Boy beach resort represents seasonal coastal use, Geoparque Mirador Sur showcases geological formations, and Cerro La Cruz offers panoramic views. Together, these places give a stay specific focal points without offering the same experience.
Geology at Geoparque Mirador Sur
Geoparque Mirador Sur is located in southern Tocopilla, in the settlement of Villa PacĂfico Sur, at the foot of the striking coastal escarpment that bounds a narrow coastal plain in the Atacama Desert. As a public space, the site covers 8,500 square meters of interior area. Walking paths, resting areas and viewpoints are arranged between, on and beneath the rocks. The geopark is therefore more than a single viewpoint: it connects spaces for walking, relaxing and observing in a geologically shaped environment.
Designed as an outdoor classroom, the geopark features interpretation routes and geology observation points. In 2019, the project was carried out by Minvu through Seremi and Serviu; the Municipality of Tocopilla maintains the site. The educational approach adds an explicitly geological focus to the visitor areas. The interpretation routes introduce geological topics along the walk; the observation points direct attention specifically to the geological formations of the rocks in this coastal landscape.
Coast and panoramic views
Caleta Boy offers a different focus. The traditional beach resort has a shade structure that protects summer visitors. Seasonal operations continued during the modernization of the coastal infrastructure. This seasonal framework is important for your planning; as the condition of the facility may change, it is advisable to check the shade structure before visiting.
Cerro La Cruz is a viewpoint in Tocopilla offering panoramic views. This sets two different focal points side by side: at the geopark, geological design and paths are central, while Cerro La Cruz is all about the panoramic views.
Trekking and birdwatching
As part of a municipal holiday program, a guided trek to Cerro La Cruz was organized. About 30 people climbed together from the Virgen del RincĂłn area to the summit. In the Municipality of Tocopilla, a guided birdwatching activity was organized at Caleta Vieja as part of a municipal holiday program; the place is also called Playa Tercera.
These organized activities differ in focus: the trek centered on the group ascent and the summit, while the birdwatching focused on the birds at Caleta Vieja. If you are interested in a guided activity on your travel date, check specific dates in advance.
Guided activities also raise a second question: do the dates fit your travel plans? The trekking tour took a group to the summit, while the birdwatching took place at Caleta Vieja; you should check specific dates in advance.
