Near Caracote lies the Salar de Carcote, a 108 km² salt flat. It is classified as a plain and a salt flat. This classification makes the natural area easier to understand: one term describes its landform, the other its character as a salt flat. The geographic relationship is important when choosing a destination: Caracote remains the destination, while the Salar is a distinct natural area in its surroundings. In this way, the Salar adds a clearly defined landscape feature to the description of Caracote.

The salt flat and its water springs

The water springs at the Salar include Aguas Calientes, Lunita, Laguna El LeĂłn, and Laguna Verde. These names add specific landmarks to the description of the area. Microniches are also mentioned in connection with the flora and fauna. These are small-scale habitats within the natural area, a different perspective from classifying the salt flat as a plain. The water springs and microniches offer two distinct viewpoints: the names identify individual landscape features, while the microniches draw attention to habitats for plants and animals. Together, this information provides a more nuanced picture of the Salar beyond its landform.

Wildlife at the Salar

The wildlife includes three named flamingo species: Chilean flamingos, Andean flamingos, and James’s flamingos. Other species include Andean gulls, Juarjual ducks, guallatas, suris or rheas, and vicuñas. Guallatas, suris or rheas, and vicuñas are noted as occurring in smaller numbers. A description from 2012 mentions vicuñas and flamingos observed at the water springs; the presence of these species can vary. Thus, a list of species found at the Salar sits alongside observations of selected animals at the water sites. You should therefore not plan on seeing them as a guaranteed part of your itinerary.

Sendero de Chile and viewpoints

The Salar is part of the OllagĂĽe macrosection of the Sendero de Chile. Five viewpoints lie along its edges: Lunita, Laguna El LeĂłn 1, Laguna El LeĂłn 2, Carcote, and Laguna Verde. The names Lunita and Laguna Verde are also used for water springs; Laguna El LeĂłn is named without a number there, but the viewpoints are distinguished as two separate points, numbered 1 and 2. When referring to either viewpoint, retain the number so the two named points can be distinguished. Note the spelling: Caracote refers to the destination, while Carcote is one of the named viewpoints.

Visitor planning note

An entry from 2012 recorded that the Salar could be visited year-round and noted that basic services were unavailable. This information describes the situation at the time and is not a guarantee of current conditions. If you are planning a visit, check access, conditions, and available services in advance.
