Since it was built around two and a half centuries ago, the Moulin Légaré has continuously milled grain. It is probably the oldest water-powered grain mill in Canada still in operation. The visitor centre explains the historic mechanisms and shows how wheat and buckwheat are ground using the original millstones. The mill thus not only brings an old craft to life, but also explores the processing of different kinds of grain.

Mill Traditions and Building History

The Église de Saint-Eustache also tells a story of a long building history. The stone Catholic church was built between 1780 and 1783 and substantially altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. Its history today therefore includes both its original construction and later modifications.

The Manoir Globensky was built in 1861 for the last Seigneur of Rivière-du-Chêne. Its architecture combines Victorian and Neoclassical elements. The Maison Chénier-Sauvé offers another glimpse into local domestic life: it was the former residence of Quebec Premier Paul Sauvé and is now a museum. The institution preserves, celebrates, interprets and studies this bourgeois residence, built around 1890. Exhibitions and educational and cultural programs are part of what it offers; the program may change. During your visit, you can also explore the surrounding gardens or spend time on the banks of the Rivière du Chêne. The gardens on display may change.

Explore Nature and Enjoy the Outdoors

Parc Nature Saint-Eustache covers 65 hectares and is suitable for outdoor activities and observing local wildlife and plant life. Visitors can encounter a wide variety of animals there, including rare species from time to time. The peaceful, protected setting contrasts with the town’s buildings and museums; the animals you may see can vary.

The park’s seasonal offerings include three accessible snowshoe trails for walks in nature. If you are planning an outing, check trail conditions in advance, as they may change. This makes snowshoeing a distinct nature-focused activity alongside the cultural attractions.

Cycling Routes and Events

For a longer bike ride, consider the 21.3-kilometre Grand tour. It follows bike paths throughout and passes through Vieux-Saint-Eustache. The shorter Virée historique is nine kilometres long and is designed as an easy family loop. It follows bike paths for most of its route and passes historic buildings, through the historic Vieux-Saint-Eustache neighbourhood, and along the Promenade Paul-Sauvé. The two routes therefore differ both in length and in their described itineraries. Municipal changes to the cycling network may affect route details, so check the route before setting out.

The Festival de la galette, a large community festival, is held every year in the heart of Vieux-Saint-Eustache. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the dates and program for that year: events may vary from year to year.

Saint-Eustache offers different options for planning a trip: mill traditions and architecture sit alongside nature watching, snowshoe trails and cycling routes. The shorter Virée historique focuses clearly on the historic neighbourhood, while the longer Grand tour passes through the same part of town. The annual festival can also be a reason in its own right to choose a particular time to visit.
