Mt Stewart is an important starting point for residents and visitors on the Confederation Trail. The community brings this trail orientation together with distinct visitor experiences: Pigot’s Trail, with a stated length; the Hillsborough River Eco-Centre, with a multilingual memorial plaque; and a gallery with a garden. This lets you choose between outdoor activity, local history, and art when planning your visit.

Confederation Trail and paths in Mt Stewart

The Hillsborough River Eco-Centre is at the intersection of the Confederation Trail and Main Street. In Mt Stewart, the Confederation Trail is an important starting point for residents and visitors. Signage identifies the community at kilometre 204, among other things, with the themes “Railway Branches, Hillsborough River Eco-Centre and the Marsh.”

Pigot’s Trail is one of the paths in the Mount Stewart Wildlife Management Area. It is 3 km long, with sections of grass and a surface of finely crushed gravel. The stated length offers a concrete guide for planning, while the description of the surface adds another feature of the trail.

Local history and art

A plaque at the Hillsborough River Eco-Centre commemorates John Stewart. According to a Parks Canada announcement dated September 12, 2025, it was unveiled there; the inscription is in English, French, and Mi’kmaq. The Eco-Centre’s official opening in 2004 included a performance area where actors and musicians could tell interactive stories about the region’s history.

Another cultural stop is Bedford Station Stopover Gardens & Gallery. Visitors can take a free, curated gallery tour featuring artists from Prince Edward Island and works in a variety of media. The contemplatively designed gardens include large garden sculptures and seating areas. Private tours of the gallery and garden are available by appointment. Public visiting hours are seasonal and may change; check the current schedule before your visit.

A break at The Hive + Honeycomb

The Hive + Honeycomb is a licensed café, pottery-painting studio, and board game lounge in Mt Stewart. Its offerings include freshly baked food, a wide selection of snacks and sandwiches, and specialty drinks and desserts. If you plan to visit, check the current offerings, as the menu may change. The combination of café, pottery painting, and board games offers several ways to spend your time there.

A different perspective on Queens County

In the wider destination of Queens County, you’ll find other historical themes that offer a distinct regional perspective. St. Elizabeth’s Anglican Church is a Gothic country church on a rise overlooking farmland. It was built of timber in 1848, using wood harvested on the property. The John Ings Senior House in Pownal dates to around 1830 and is one of the community’s earliest buildings; from there, views extend across farmland and Pownal Bay.

Also in Queens County, the Port-la-Joye–Fort Amherst National Historic Site of Canada is recognized for its role from 1720 to 1770 as a seat of government and port of entry for settlers arriving on Prince Edward Island. This regional history complements Mt Stewart’s local themes with further perspectives on the island’s architecture, landscape, and history.
