Barrie offers both waterfront destinations and trails with distinctly different routes: the Spirit Catcher stands on the waterfront, while the Nine Mile Portage Heritage Trail runs from downtown to Fort Willow in Springwater Township. There are also parks, museums and historical topics to consider in different ways when planning your stay.

Waterfront, Art and Parks

Barrie's waterfront promenade is complemented by more than 350 hectares of landscaped parkland. Four major beaches along Kempenfelt Bay are part of the waterfront's recreational offerings. Beach access is seasonal; check current beach advisories before swimming.

The Spirit Catcher has stood on the waterfront on municipal land in Barrie since 1987. In 1989, the artwork was added to the permanent collection of the MacLaren Art Centre. The Waterfront Heritage Trail offers an outdoor experience along the waterfront with self-guided interpretive information. The Waterfront Trail along Kempenfelt Bay is another option: it is about 6.7 kilometres long and runs mostly flat and paved through the waterfront parks. Check current municipal notices for possible trail work before planning your visit.

Trails and Green Spaces

Barrie's public trail network spans more than 88 kilometres. The Nine Mile Portage Heritage Trail connects Meridian Place downtown with Fort Willow in Springwater Township and can be used for hiking and cycling. The North Shore Trail, by contrast, runs the entire length of the north shore of Kempenfelt Bay in Barrie. The routes differ in scope: the trail network covers the city, the Nine Mile Portage Heritage Trail connects Meridian Place downtown with Fort Willow in Springwater Township, and the North Shore Trail runs along the entire north shore of Kempenfelt Bay in Barrie.

The green spaces beyond these routes also differ in their details. Ardagh Bluffs has 17 kilometres of trails across 524 acres; most of the area is designated Environmentally Protected (EP). Sunnidale Park is in northwest Barrie and covers 48.5 acres, with the Barrie Arboretum and trails. Maintenance, weather or municipal work may affect individual trails. Checking current notices can help you assess the specific route for your visit.

Art, History and Museums

The MacLaren Art Centre is located in downtown Barrie and includes several galleries, an education centre and a sculpture courtyard. At the Grey & Simcoe Foresters Regimental Museum, visitors can see historical artifacts, including uniforms from various eras, medals, field equipment, official awards and historical documents.

Military Heritage Park was dedicated on June 6, 2009. It recognizes the significant relationship between Barrie and Canadian Forces Base Borden, as well as the community's military involvement and history. The Rotary Club of Barrie and city council contributed to the park. The Holly History installation at the Peggy Hill Team Community Centre offers another historical perspective: its wall panels cover the history of the Holly neighbourhood, its settlers, Holly war veterans and the region's Indigenous history.

The Heritage-Barrie Walking Tour is a self-guided tour of historic homes, shops and landmarks on Barrie's streets. Check before your trip to see whether a guide is available. This lets you distinguish the self-guided interpretation along the streets from the museum and memorial perspective.

Farmers' Market and Special Visits

Every Saturday, the Barrie Farmers’ Market brings together local farmers, food producers and artisans offering regional products. The mix of vendors changes seasonally. If the market is part of your plans, keep this change in mind when considering which vendors you might find.

Tours of Barrie's fire stations can be booked. The tour of Station 1 includes a fire museum and lasts 45 to 60 minutes, depending on the number of visitors and their questions. Confirm booking availability and tour details with Barrie Fire before your trip. Doors Open Barrie takes place annually and offers free public tours at local landmarks. Check the dates for that year's event when planning your trip.
