South River is located on Highway 11. Three distinct highlights can help you get your bearings: access to Tom Thomson Park, South River Cascade on Mill Road, and opportunities for paddling and hiking. This gives you a way to assess the destination in terms of water activities, scenery and exercise, and plan your stay accordingly.
Tom Thomson Park and Paddling
At the eastern end of the pedestrian trail network on Ottawa Avenue, a 600-metre accessible trail leads to Tom Thomson Park. The shoreline is suitable for kayaking, canoeing and stand-up paddleboarding. Visitors also gather in the park to observe the night sky. Water sports and night-sky observation are thus distinct reasons to visit.
South River is considered one of the main gateways for paddling trips to Algonquin Provincial Park. The South River Water Trail is also nearby: it is 14.5 kilometres long and includes two short portages around hydroelectric generating stations. Conditions along the route and at the portages can change; check them before setting out. The two distances refer to different offerings: 600 metres for the accessible trail to the park, and 14.5 kilometres for the Water Trail. At the portages, boats are carried overland around the hydroelectric generating stations rather than passing those sections on the water.
South River Cascade and Its Surroundings
Located along Mill Road in the Village of South River, South River Cascade is a natural and engineered landscape feature. It offers opportunities for photography and occasional visits. A railway line crosses the water near the cascade, forming a narrow corridor between the surrounding bodies of water. The cascade and the railway corridor are thus distinct features of the landscape.
Hiking, Trails and Recreation
South River offers year-round hiking opportunities. The South River area also has backcountry trails that are open year-round for non-motorized recreational activities and maintained by volunteers. Hiking in South River and the backcountry trails in the area are therefore distinct options for enjoying nature and getting active.
The Village of South River Skate Park is open to all ages. Check current operating conditions before your visit.
The South River Machar Fall Fair offers a weekend opportunity to experience agriculture, rural heritage, family traditions and community. It offers a different focus from hiking or paddling, centring on rural themes and community. While hiking in South River is available year-round, the fair is a weekend event.
