Magnetawan is located on the Magnetawan River. The town’s history comes to life through specific themes: logging and farming, early electricity and lock construction. There is also a seasonal market, a park by the water, and opportunities for hiking and mountain biking. This gives you different options when planning your trip—culture, local produce, or time by the water.

Local History at the Heritage Centre

The Magnetawan Historical Heritage Centre Museum houses an extensive collection of artifacts relating to the region’s logging and farming history. The history of technology is also represented: the museum displays a restored plant and turbine that powered the town’s first electricity supply. A hydroelectric plant was installed at the Heritage Centre site in the 1880s to power Purdy’s Four Mill. A log cabin built in the style of the 1930s complements the exhibition. Together, these exhibits trace the story from logging and farming to the facilities that supplied power and motive force.

While visiting the museum, visitors can borrow bicycles and recreational games at no charge. In summer, the Heritage Centre also lends out beach toys. There is also a table for painting stones to add to a community rock snake. As availability may vary, it is advisable to check before visiting. The museum is open seasonally, so check whether it will be open on your travel dates.

Market and Art by the Water

For 2026, the Magnetawan Farmers Market is scheduled to run for its 36th season from the Victoria Day long weekend through Thanksgiving. It takes place on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Community Centre pavilion on Sparks Street. Check the dates for the relevant year before travelling. Offerings include Ontario produce, fresh baked goods, local honey, maple syrup, jams, jellies and other goods; the selection may vary by vendor. Weekly performances by local musicians are also announced for 2026.

The market brings together regional produce and music, while the museum focuses on local history. At Magnetawan Village Green Park, the focus is on the waterfront setting and public art. The park is home to the “X” Marks the Spot installation and the Chainsaw Steamship Carving, a chainsaw carving added in 2024. Check before your visit to see whether the carving is still on display. The park also has a picnic area with tables.

Locks, Waterway and Trails on Land

Magnetawan is home to the Magnetawan Locks and Dam system. The dam and lock system is located on the Magnetawan River in the town centre; a seasonal local history museum and information centre is beside the dam. Boats can travel upstream or downstream on the Magnetawan Waterway through the locks between Ahmic Lake and Cecebe Lake. Check current lock operations before setting out.

The 1.2 km hiking trail offers views of the historic lighthouse at the mouth of the Distress River. Since the route information does not indicate the trail’s current condition, it is advisable to check local conditions before setting out. The quiet country roads around the village are suitable for mountain biking. These options offer distinctly different experiences: a boat passage through the lock system, a trail with views of the lighthouse, or mountain biking on country roads.
