Antigonish combines a strong cultural identity with opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. The Antigonish Heritage Museum is dedicated to the heritage of Antigonish Town and Antigonish County, the Highland Games have been running since 1863, and theatre offerings add seasonal highlights. When planning your trip, it’s worth treating the cultural program in Antigonish and the coastal and hiking opportunities in the broader destination of Antigonish County as distinct areas of focus.

Cultural History and Highland Games

The Antigonish Heritage Museum is a community museum. It is dedicated to preserving and promoting cultural understanding of the heritage of Antigonish Town and Antigonish County. Its two main rooms feature exhibits on the history and material culture of the region. This means that, alongside historical developments, the things and ways of life that make up material culture are also in focus.

The Antigonish Highland Games take place in Antigonish and have been running since 1863. Their beginnings included a parade, bagpipe and drum music, Scottish dancing, athletic events, and a gathering of Scots from around the world.

Theatre and Farmers’ Market

Theatre Antigonish is a community theatre; since 1974, it has been supported by St. Francis Xavier University and the people of Antigonish. Its season runs from October to March at the Bauer Theatre next to the University Chapel. Festival Antigonish was founded in 1987 and also takes place at the Bauer Theatre in Antigonish. The two names represent different theatre contexts at a shared venue. For specific visit dates, check the respective schedules.

The Antigonish Farmers’ Market is open every Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. from May to December. If you’re planning a visit to the market, check the schedule again before your trip.

Getting Around Antigonish

The Antigonish Active Transportation Trail is designed as a paved, multi-use path for walking, running and cycling. Construction status varies by section. So before planning, check the status of the section you want to use. This keeps your route planning tied to the actual section, rather than assuming the trail’s proposed design is a fully completed route throughout.

Antigonish County: Coast and Hiking Trails

Antigonish County lies along the Northumberland Shore on the Sunrise Trail. Cliffs along the North Shore of Antigonish County plunge into the sea. Lookouts along the Antigonish North Shore offer safe places to pull over and information panels about the region’s history and culture. This connects coastal views with insights into regional history.

The Antigonish Harbour Wildlife Management Area is a wildlife sanctuary. The Antigonish Landing Trail runs through this area. The county offers a variety of hiking trails: the Fairmont Ridge Hiking Trail has six loop trails across rolling terrain, while the Fairmont Hiking Trail has 12 kilometres of well-marked trails. Beaver Mountain offers views of Antigonish County and Cape Breton Island; its 6 km trail system includes paved paths and more challenging, unpaved hills.

Eastern Antigonish County has gravel and sandy beaches, quiet harbours and tidal estuaries that are home to numerous waterbirds and shorebirds, as well as other wildlife. The coast offers opportunities for swimming, beachcombing and birdwatching; conditions vary by season. In Arisaig, a 1.5 km hiking trail winds through the forest and provides access to the shore. Snowshoeing is also possible there, depending on seasonal conditions.
