Along the North Shore of Antigonish County, coastal cliffs drop into the sea. The county lies on the Northumberland Shore and the Sunrise Trail. Lookouts along the Antigonish North Shore offer safe places to stop and information panels about the region’s history and culture. Here, coastal landscapes meet local stories.

Coast, Shore and Wildlife

In eastern Antigonish County, pebble and sandy beaches alternate with quiet harbours and tidal estuaries. These coastal areas are home to waterfowl, shorebirds and other wildlife. The coast offers opportunities for swimming, beachcombing and birdwatching; recreational activities are subject to seasonal conditions.

The Antigonish Harbour Wildlife Management Area is a wildlife reserve. The Antigonish Landing Trail passes through it. Another trail runs along the shore at Mahoneys Beach, offering a chance to observe local wildlife. Both trails connect the coastal landscape with nature viewing, but pass through different types of terrain.

There are also several places to take a break at the beach: Bayfield Beach Provincial Park offers an opportunity to picnic. At Pomquet Beach, boardwalks wind through the surrounding woods, and the beach slopes gently. Check seasonal services there before your visit.

Hiking Trails with Different Highlights

In Arisaig, a 1.5-kilometre hiking trail connects the woods and shore: it runs through the forest and provides access to the water. The area is also known for its geology and fossils. If you’re interested in a seasonal activity, you can also go snowshoeing there; availability depends on conditions.

Beaver Mountain offers views of Antigonish County and Cape Breton Island. Its trail system covers six kilometres and includes paved paths and more challenging, unpaved hills. At Fairmont Ridge Hiking Trail, you can choose from six different loop trails over hilly terrain. Fairmont Hiking Trail, by contrast, has twelve kilometres of well-marked trails. These details describe different things: the number of loop trails is the defining feature of the first trail, while the second is distinguished by its length.

Other options add to the selection, though not all trails are alike. Keppoch Mountain has numerous hiking trails. At Fairmont Ridge, loop trails and hilly terrain define the experience; at Mahoneys Beach, the shoreline takes centre stage. As you explore, you can choose between different landscapes and trail descriptions rather than judging a trail’s character by its name alone.

At Pomquet Beach, boardwalks wind through the woods, while the beach slopes gently. Linwood Heritage Nature Trail and Picnic Area offers a place to walk and picnic. It also provides access for small boats to Linwood Harbour. If you plan to use this water access, check the launch conditions on site.

History and Culture in Their Local Settings

The Cape George Heritage School Museum focuses on artefacts and information about regional heritage and culture. The Ballantyne’s Cove Bluefin Tuna Interpretive Centre explores tuna and the history of tuna fishing. The Cape George Lighthouse has information panels; the Cape George Hiking Trails are accessible from locations at Cape George.

Church and monastery history is also part of the local discoveries. St Anne’s Church in Summerside was built in 1867 as a Mi’kmaq mission church. Our Lady of Grace Monastery and Outdoor Shrine dates back to 1825: Father Vincent de Paule Merle founded it with a small group of French Trappists, who named it Petit Clairvaux. The two dates refer to different historical contexts and places.

The Arisaig Lobster Dinner takes place every year on Mother’s Day at the Arisaig Parish Community Centre. Check the current date before you travel. This makes it easier to connect a visit with your interest in regional history, coastal scenery or trails, without needing to follow a set order of discovery.
