Neguac brings together places that commemorate the history of Acadian families, parks, walking trails, and waterfront nature. When planning your trip, you can balance cultural history with time outdoors: Otho Robichaud Historic Place and the Savoie Monument tell different aspects of the area’s history, while the parks each focus on nature, recreation, and play.

Acadian Family History

Otho Robichaud Historic Place is designated a Provincial Historic Place. The designation recognizes the site’s connection to the family of Otho Robichaud. He was an Acadian justice of the peace in northeastern New Brunswick. The site thus points to a specific person and family history in Neguac, while the designation also recognizes it as heritage.

The Savoie Monument commemorates Neguac’s first settlers and ancestors. The first Savoie family came to this area around 1757. Jean Savoie and his wife Anne Landry settled here and became the community’s first pioneer family after fleeing the Miramichi River in the winter of 1756–1757. The monument thus connects remembrance of the ancestors with the story of a specific pioneer family.

Walking Trails, Nature, and Parks

ĂŽle-Aux-Foins Park has a network of walking trails and information panels about the surrounding flora and fauna. The park offers ecotourism and opportunities for outdoor family activities. It also has an unsupervised saltwater beach with shallow water. The trails and panels highlight the natural environment, while the beach adds a distinct waterfront area.

Richelieu Municipal Park is in the heart of the community and includes picnic and recreation areas, a playground, and a splash pad. Its focus differs from that of Île-Aux-Foins: picnicking, recreation, and play complement the walking trails, nature panels, and saltwater beach. This makes it easy to choose a park based on what you’re looking for.

The lighthouse site on Hay Island has a picnic area and a playground; it is accessible via the causeway to the island.

Visitor Information and Practical Facilities

Neguac Wharf offers water, electricity, a boat launch, and parking. The Neguac Visitor Information Centre helps visitors with advice, a shop selling local souvenirs, and a waste disposal station for recreational vehicles.

Another Look at Northumberland County

Northumberland County offers historical and cultural topics beyond Neguac’s local history. Nelson Hollow Bridge is considered the oldest covered bridge in New Brunswick and the only covered bridge still standing in Northumberland County. In Bartibog, MacDonald Farm was built between 1815 and 1820 and designated a protected historic property in 1977. The Atlantic Salmon Museum in Doaktown explains the importance of Atlantic salmon as a resource worthy of protection and as a fish whose beauty and elusive nature have captivated anglers around the world.
