Blackville can be explored from two perspectives: Blackville Municipal Park brings together river access and trail activities, while historic buildings offer insights into the area’s architecture and history. This gives you a basis for shaping your stay around the water, heritage or seasonal experiences, without needing to follow a rigid itinerary.

Rivers and Trails in Blackville Municipal Park

Blackville Municipal Park lies between the Miramichi River and the Bartholomew River. Its boat launch allows canoes, kayaks and motorboats to be launched directly into the Miramichi River. This provides a specific starting point for a trip on the water: the launch leads into the Miramichi River.

Tree-lined trails in the park are intended for families to walk, jog and cycle, and are part of the Sentier NB Trail system. This means that activities on the water and on the trails are available side by side in the same park. Which ones suit your stay depends on whether you would rather head out onto the river by boat or spend time on the trails.

Historic Buildings and Local Connections

The Walls House is designated a Local Historic Place and currently serves seasonally as a community library and museum. Confirm its seasonal function before visiting. Architecturally, it is a two-storey farmhouse in the vernacular Classic Revival style, built around the turn of the 20th century. Its architectural form, approximate date of construction and current seasonal use offer different clues for understanding the building.

The James Bean Store is a commercial building with one storey and a half-storey; it was built around the 1890s in the Village of Blackville. Schaffer's Store is also designated a Local Historic Place and is associated with merchant and mill owner Moses Schaffer. The buildings therefore differ both in their architectural form and date, as well as in their historical connections.

Sturgeon's Store currently operates as a sporting goods retail store. If visiting the store is part of your plans, check its current opening information. Another attraction is Veteran’s Fly – Largest Salmon Fly: the attraction is located at the corner of Main Street and South Bartholomew Road in Blackville.

Seasonal Encounters and Visitor Information

At the Dungarvon Whooper Experience, you can meet Fiona on Saturdays throughout the summer at 9 p.m., right outside the Miramichi River Valley Tourism Information Centre, 168 Main Street in Blackville. Check current dates and ticket availability before your trip to make sure the specific Saturday event fits your plans.

The Miramichi River Valley Tourism Information Centre is located in the fully renovated former summer kitchen of the Walls House. It offers free travel advice and information about events, attractions and festivals. It is available seasonally from June through September. The seasonal use of the Walls House, the information centre’s availability and the Experience’s set Saturday evening time are therefore separate points to consider when choosing your travel dates.
