At the summit of Mont Pointu de Rivière-Verte stands an observation tower with a 360-degree panoramic view. The mountain is also known as montagne des Therrien. This makes Rivière-Verte a distinctive destination for travelers who consider views and outdoor activities when choosing where to go.

Views and Getting Your Bearings

There are information panels at Mont Pointu. For hiking, Pointu de la rivière Verte has trails and a lookout point; snowshoeing is possible at Mont Pointu. The names are similar, but the details describe different landmarks and activities.

Another specific landmark is the covered Boniface Bridge. You can reach it from Exit 32 on Route 2 via Davis North Road, a 4.9 km route, and then via Boniface Road. This makes it possible to locate the bridge using a named exit and a sequence of roads.

Activities in Rivière-Verte

Rivière-Verte is considered a good place for sport fishing, especially trout fishing. In winter, the hills are popular with snowmobilers. Snowshoeing is possible at Mont Pointu—along with the observation tower and information panels, the mountain also offers opportunities for outdoor activities.

A bike path runs along Route 144, and there is also a picnic area along the route. These two amenities offer a different focus from sport fishing or winter activities in the hills. Visitors choosing Rivière-Verte based on their interests can find both trails and a place for a picnic break, as well as fishing and snowmobiling.

Nature and History in Madawaska County

In the wider destination of Madawaska County, the nature park in the Ward of Saint-François offers another perspective on the landscape: it is suitable for family picnics, and offers a view of the Saint John River. Canoeing, kayaking and fishing are listed as activities at Lac Unique and Lac Glazier in the Ward of Saint-François. The park, river view and two lakes represent different themes within the county; they are regional additions, not features of Rivière-Verte itself.

The cultural sites in Madawaska County also have different historical focuses. At Ledges… Place des Pionniers, a path runs between historic buildings dedicated to the pioneers of the Saint-François District. The site is a scaled-down replica of the former village of Saint-François, once known as Ledges.

The replica’s buildings include a residence, a church, a farm, a post office, a school and a general store. The path between the buildings and the facilities represented highlight different aspects of a former village—from homes and farming to school, commerce and postal services.

In Saint-François, the Forge Jos B. Michaud was built in 1894. It operated for at least 100 years before being passed on to the blacksmith’s son. The Musée de la Forge Jos B. Michaud offers insights into blacksmithing through its tools and the story of its former owner, Joseph B. Michaud. The focus here is the history of a trade.

Another historical landmark is the Cyr Historical House in Saint-Basile. Alexis Cyr built the house between 1825 and 1830; it is considered the oldest house in Madawaska County. Taken together, the house, the forge and the scaled-down replica of Saint-François highlight different themes: the history of a house, blacksmithing and the story of a former village.
