The history of Fairhaven United Baptist Church spans more than a single date: the founding of the congregation, the construction of the church and its relocation mark distinct chapters. In Clam Cove, the public wharf adds another landmark.
Church History in Fairhaven
On July 14, 1868, Elders William Brown and Freeman Babcock founded a Free Will Baptist Church in Fairhaven with nine members. The Fairhaven United Baptist Church building was completed in 1884. On November 13, 1904, Fairhaven voted unanimously to join the Maritime Baptist Union; the congregation thereby became Fairhaven United Baptist Church.
In 1951, the church was moved from a site near the old cemetery to its current location on donated land and extended by 27 feet. During renovations, the congregation gathered in the Victoria Hall auditorium. The first service in the renovated building was held on December 30, 1951. In 1957, a stained-glass window was installed in the church and dedicated to Frank Wentworth. Together, these milestones tell the story of a congregation whose building changed along with its name.
