St George can be explored through its history, trails and waterways. The Presbyterian Kirk has been continuously used as a place of worship since 1790. Together with designated historic sites and activities on the Magaguadavic River, the town offers several distinct themes: religious use, regional heritage and nature experiences from the water.

History and Notable Places

Fort Hill Cannons is designated as a local historic site because it was intended to play a role in the War of 1812 and during the Fenian Raid of 1866. The Historic Places Walking Tour presents the history and folklore of the region, with stories dating back to the early Loyalist settlers. Alongside the Presbyterian Kirk, which has been continuously used since 1790, these offer different ways to explore history: a place of worship in continuous use, a designated historic site and regional heritage.

At St. George Falls, the focus is on the landscape. The falls were formerly called First Falls; First Falls was also the town’s original name. St. George Falls invite visitors to explore the gorge.

Trails, River and Nature

The Coastal Link Trail connects St Stephen with Saint John and points beyond. In St George, there is a 1.5 km paved section: it runs from the eastern town limit on Main Street, along the former railway line, to Riverview Avenue. For orientation, it is useful to distinguish this clearly defined local section from the trail’s broader route.

Eagles Nest at 2 South Street is a picnic spot with scenic views of The Basin. The Basin is a popular spot for eagles, hawks and ospreys in spring and summer.

The Magaguadavic River forms the centre of the Town of St. George. For canoeists and kayakers, it offers a peaceful and easily accessible way to explore nature from the water. Other adventures listed for St George include whale watching, scuba diving and cycling tours.

More to Explore in the Wider Charlotte County Destination

The wider Charlotte County destination also offers historic and scenic attractions. Residents built the St. Andrews Blockhouse during the War of 1812 to protect the town from American privateers and military forces. Visitors can explore the barracks and gun battery there. At the St. Andrews Blockhouse, the coastal and harbour water levels rise and fall twice daily by an average of 7.24 metres.

Tides also determine access to Ministers Island: the island is accessible only at low tide and is home to the Van Horne estate, walking trails and coastal views. Check tide access before visiting. Another kind of regional attraction is Kingsbrae Garden in Saint Andrews, a 27-acre horticultural and ornamental garden. It is open daily from mid-May to October; check the seasonal dates before your trip.
