Garden Bay combines waterfront nature with hiking and local history. When planning your visit, it’s worth considering how the different places vary: the Marine Park, lakes and hiking trails each offer different activities, while the Heritage Tour and exhibitions add a cultural dimension.
Waterfront, Lakes and Hiking Trails
Garden Bay Marine Park has 200 metres of shoreline. Beyond it, the terrain rises to the summit of Mount Daniel. Fishing, picnicking and swimming are possible at the park; it is also a boating area with a secure anchorage and a small dinghy dock. This makes it a place to enjoy both the waterfront and boating activities.
The Mount Daniel Trail takes about 90 minutes to reach the summit; the distance from Garden Bay Road to the summit is 4 km. Pender Hill is nearby. Its hiking trail is 1.5 km long, takes about 30 minutes and is difficult because of its steep gradient. Near the top of Pender Hill, a large open area of smooth rock offers a place to enjoy the views. In addition to the trail’s length and duration, Pender Hill is specifically noted for its steep, difficult terrain. For planning purposes, the hike to the summit of Mount Daniel takes about 90 minutes, compared with about 30 minutes for the Pender Hill trail.
Water and Nature
At Garden Bay Lake, you can swim, kayak, stand-up paddleboard and picnic on the shore. The options range from activities on the water to a relaxing break by the lake.
Katherine Lake is a popular swimming lake and allows non-motorized boating. It is also home to an endangered population of Western Painted Turtles. Katherine Lake Campground is in Garden Bay, near Pender Harbour on the Sunshine Coast. The lake has picnic facilities, a small playground and washroom facilities. As campground amenities can change, check the current status of these facilities before your trip.
Heritage in Garden Bay
The self-guided Heritage Tour of Pender Harbour includes significant historic sites in Garden Bay. It adds a distinct way to explore the area’s history alongside its nature and waterfront experiences.
The historic Irvines Landing School building in Garden Bay hosts heritage courses and changing exhibitions. The exhibitions showcase artifacts and archival material from the Pender Harbour area. While the tour includes historic sites, courses and exhibitions take place at the school building. If a particular course or exhibition is important to your trip, check the dates in advance.
